Abstract: Methods and apparatus to detect commercial advertisements associated with media presentations are disclosed. An example method involves receiving a video frame and detecting a change in box-formatting between the video frame and a subsequent video frame. A transition between the video frame and the subsequent video frame is indicated as a commercial advertisement transition based on the detected change in box-formatting.

The method includes receiving an automation playlist indicating at least one scheduled avail tone configured to be included in a broadcast. The method includes determining whether the at least one scheduled avail tone was triggered in the broadcast based upon the corresponding signaling.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for monitoring locally inserted media are disclosed. A disclosed system for detecting locally inserted media includes a tag encoder and a media monitoring device at a media presentation location. The tag encoder is to associate an identifying tag with a segment of a media stream carrying local media that was spliced into a primary media stream after the primary media stream was received by an editing station of a media distributor. The media monitoring device is to: detect presentation of the media stream; determine that the segment is local media that was spliced into the primary media stream based on changes in the media stream indicative of transitions between primary media and local media, the changes including changes in identifying tags; and store an indication to credit presentation of the media and to indicate that the media stream includes locally inserted media.

An example apparatus disclosed herein includes a parser to access compressed audio data packets from a compressed data bitstream, a time shifter to time shift the compressed audio data packets in data frames of the compressed data bitstream to occupy locations of the data frames from which skip bytes are eliminated, and an inserter to insert at least one of audience measurement data or interactive data into auxiliary data fields of the data frames that increase in size due to the time shifting the compressed audio data.

Abstract: A probe is configured to monitor one or more communication parameters on one or more downstream frequency channels carried on a communication medium of an access network. Results of repeated monitoring are stored over a predetermined period. At the conclusion of the monitoring period, data reports reflecting the stored results are transmitted in upstream frequency channels carried on the same medium. The probe can also be configured to send immediate messages if a parameter exceeds predefined limits and can store a plurality of monitoring programs and can be reprogrammed remotely. The probe can be contained within a cable tap if the medium is, e.g., a coaxial cable. Numerous probes can be deployed throughout an access network so as to provide monitoring data from each of many locations over a prolonged period.

Abstract: An independent auditing and ad service system that may be utilized with a system for presenting marketing campaigns to audiences via a network of players in public locations. Independent agents in the players monitor media content that is presented to audiences during marketing campaigns and generate independent agent playlogs that are provided to a content registry service which compares the independent agent playlogs with playlogs that are provided by a network operator to validate the network-operator-generated playlogs. The independent agent playlogs may also be provided to an analytics service where they are used to analyze the performance of marketing campaigns. From the analyzed performance, the service may determine that the media content presented to audiences via the media players should be changed. The independent agents may be instructed to implement recommended changes by modifying the media content being presented on the players.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for automatically capturing event occurrence data associated with a broadcast channel. A baseline schedule for the broadcast channel is imported that includes an identification of events scheduled to appear on the broadcast channel and scheduled times for those events. A prompt is provided via a graphical user interface for a user to enter a time of actual occurrence of event appearances on the broadcast channel. Indications of times of an appearance and that events did not air on the broadcast channel are received via the prompt. The indications are stored in a computer-readable medium, and a report is provided that identifies events that did appear on the broadcast channel and their time of appearance and events that did not appear on the broadcast channel.

Abstract: In one aspect, a system for detecting and classifying direct response advertisements includes an advertisement candidate segment generation unit for generating an advertisement candidate segment for an advertisement section detected from a broadcast stream, a matching unit for determining whether the advertisement candidate segment matches an advertisement segment stored in an advertisement database (DB), a direct response advertisement determination unit for determining whether the advertisement candidate segment is a direct response advertisement if it is determined by the matching unit that an advertisement segment matching the advertisement candidate segment is not present, and a direct response advertisement grouping unit for grouping the advertisement candidate segment with advertisement segments that are direct response advertisements stored in the advertisement DB.
