    摘要: A process is described for milling a window in the casing (2) of an oil or gas producing well, for example in order to drill a lateral well branching off from the main well. A wireline milling tool is first used, in a relatively low cost operation, to create a small window (14) or notch in the casing (2). Provided a small window (14) or notch can be created successfully, an expensive heavy duty coil tubing milling operation can then be conducted to create the full window, some 4-6 feet in length. Previous attempts to create a full window using wireline tools have encountered difficulties due to there being no circulating drilling fluid to remove metal swarf and due to the need for the tool to be supported by casing during the milling operation, when the integrity of the casing is being compromised by drilling the window. The proposed wireline tool has an actuator (4) with relatively small stroke length and a relatively small container (8) to manage the swarf produced by the milling process.

    摘要: The present invention is directed to a method of salvaging an elongated oil well tubular that extends downwardly from an oil well platform as well as a saw apparatus of improved configuration. The method includes supporting the tubular in a generally upright or vertical position. A cutting apparatus is placed next to the tubular. The cutting apparatus includes a frame that supports a lifting device and a rotary cutter. The lifting device moves the rotary cutter from a first position to a second position that is higher than the first position. The second position is closer to the tubular than the first position. The rotary cutter can travel in an arcuate path when moving from the first position to the second position. The cutter moves along a selected path to cut the tubular. After cutting, the cut section is removed and the tubular then elevated so that an additional cut can be made. This procedure is repeated multiple times until the tubular has been salvaged, cut into many smaller pieces or sections.

The assembly includes a frame having an upper frame section adapted for attachment to a top drive system and a lower frame section adapted to interface with a flowhead assembly. The assembly also includes a pair of hydraulic cylinders spaced apart from one another, the hydraulic cylinders having a respective cylinder barrel and a piston rod translatable therein with free end of the piston rods being fixed to the upper frame section. The assembly also includes a piston accumulator disposed adjacent to a first of the hydraulic cylinders and in fluid communication therewith via a hydraulic fluid line and an air accumulator disposed adjacent to a second of the hydraulic cylinders and in fluid communication with the piston accumulator via a pneumatic fluid line.
