A method is provided for operating a spinning machine with a multiple number of spinning stations. In the normal case, the individual spinning stations are supplied with a fiber material and produce a yarn. Upon the occurrence of predefined events, yarn production is interrupted at individual or all spinning stations, whereas such spinning stations are, when required, subjected to piecing with the assistance of a piecing process in order to start up yarn production again. The respective piecing is carried out with the assistance of handling tools associated with the spinning machine. The individual spinning stations are classified on the basis of one or more production-related parameters, and that, if more piecing processes are to be carried out at the same time than can be carried out by the handling tools, at least the selection of the spinning station to be subjected to piecing next is carried out under consideration of the specified classification.

With a method for controlling a piecing process for piecing up a yarn at a textile machine, in particular a spinning machine, by means of a piecing device, a multiple number of work steps as preparation for the actual piecing operation are carried out successively in a chronological sequence. In each case, a predetermined time period is allocated to the work steps. For at least one of the work steps, the predetermined time period can be varied, whereas the current time period of the work step is determined as a function of a yarn characteristic of the currently produced yarn and/or as a function of a utilization of the piecing device. A control unit is designed to operate the textile machine according to this method.

A roving machine and method for producing a roving from a fiber sliver has at least one spinning station with a vortex chamber, an infeed opening for the fiber sliver, and a roving forming element in the form of a spindle that has an inlet port and extends at least partially into the vortex chamber. The vortex chamber is associated with spinning nozzles through which air can be guided into the vortex chamber to impart, after a piecing process, a protective twist to the fiber sliver in the region of the inlet port. The spindle has a draw-off channel via which the roving provided with the protective twist is drawn out of the vortex chamber. Piecing nozzles are additionally associated with the vortex chamber, wherein each of the piecing nozzles has a flow direction which is aligned in the direction of the inlet port of the spindle.

Upon the start of spinning a thread (F), two auxiliary roll-pairs (20, 21) bring an end (E) of the concerned thread into a preparatory position (P) within an entrainment zone of a suction induced air stream, which stream enters an open-end spinning apparatus (10). At this point, in order to uphold the continuity of the thread, the said auxiliary roll-pairs (20, 21) are stilled in their revolution. With renewed drive, the second roll-pair (21), located more distant from the open-end spinning apparatus (10), causes a reversely directed thread movement, whereby, between the two said roll-pairs (20, 21), a thread surplus is created. This thread accumulation between the roll-pairs 20, 21 is retained in a pneumatic thread storage unit (23). The second auxiliary roll-pair (21) is then stopped from further rotation. The first auxiliary roll-pair (20), proximal to the open-end spinning apparatus (10), now opens itself, thus freeing its clamp on the thread. Subsequently, the action of the air stream in the thread storage unit (23) is ended by means of a positioning device (4), or alternately, the air flow may be reversed in its direction. The thread, which is released (F) by the described action, is picked up by the suction induced air stream which is entering the open-end spinning apparatus (10) and contacts a fiber collection surface (101). At this location, the thread end interbinds with incoming fibers. The thread, now renewed in continuity, is removed from said surface with the aid of the second auxiliary roll-pair (21) and is delivered to a main withdrawal roll-pair (13). In case the diameter of the spin rotor be changed, complementarily, the size of the accumulation of the stored thread between the auxiliary rolls (20, 21) is made to conform to the new diameter by means of adjustment apparatus (30).

A procedure is described in which an open-end rotor spinning machine already in operation can be modernized by means of re-equipping it with new parts. This machine comprises device means for interrupting the spinning process at a spinning station for the purpose of a doffing operation. The machine comprises a doffing arrangement which is movable relative to the spinning stations, which doffing arrangement comprises devices for exchanging a full bobbin for an empty yarn-winding tube. The machine comprises further at least one piecing arrangement movable in relation to the spinning stations, which is designed to restart spinning at the spinning station with a starting winding already connected to the yarn-winding tube. It is an object of the modernization that the piecing arrangement is replaced with a new piecing arrangement, which is designed to restart spinning with a starting yarn which is not connected to the yarn-winding tube, and subsequently to attach a newly spun yarn to the yarn-winding tube. In the case of the new piecing arrangement any piecing point of the yarn after a doffing operation onto the bobbin is omitted. This results in an increase in bobbin quality. The piecing arrangement is also operable to perform piecing operation in case of a yarn break with a partially full bobbin, where yarn from the partially full bobbin is used for piecing.

To repair the yarn break, a defined yarn length is unwound off the winding bobbin and is temporarily stored in a yarn reservoir disposed between a yarn draw-off device and a lap drive of the piecing cart. Subsequently, the winding bobbin is acceleratively driven by the lap drive sufficiently in advance of actuating the yarn draw-off device to achieve a predetermined winding speed as of the time the withdrawal of spun yarn from the spinning unit resumes.
