A new set of effective, environmentally safe, nonflammable, low-toxicity refrigerants, solvents, foam blowing agents, propellants, and firefighting agents is disclosed. The agents are clean, electrically nonconductive, and have short atmospheric lifetimes, zero ozone-depletion potential, and low global warming potentials. The agents comprise at least one fluoroiodocarbon agent satisfying the general formula CaHbBrcCldFeIfNgOh, wherein a is between and including 1 and 8; b is between and including 0 and 2; c, d, g, and h are each between and including 0 and 1; e is between and including 1 and 18; and f is between and including 1 and 2, either neat or mixed with additives selected from the group consisting of: alcohols, esters, ethers, fluoroethers, hydrocarbons, hydrofluorocarbons, and perfluorocarbons.

The invention provides a process for the preparation of a cellular polymeric product which comprises reaction of a polyisocyanate composition with an isocyanate-reactive composition having a functionality of at least 2, in the presence of a blowing agent and in the presence of an inert, organic liquid which is substantially insoluble in the reaction mixture and which is present as the disperse phase of an emulsion or a microemulsion, characterized in that the polyisocyanate composition comprises polymethylene polyphenylene polyisocyanate having a functionality of at least 2.5 and a urethane-modified, isocyanate-ended prepolymer, wherein the isocyanate functionality of the polyisocyanate composition is at least 2.3 and wherein the concentration of urethane linkages in the polyisocyanate composition is in the range from 1 millimole to 150 millimoles per 100 grams thereof. The invention also provides a novel polyisocyanate composition for use in the process and cellular polymeric products prepared according to the process.

A blowing agent composition, comprising: (i) azodicarbonamide; (ii) zinc oxide and/or zinc carbonate; and (iii) at least one member selected from the group consisting of zinc salts of C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 organic acids, and C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 organic carboxamides characterized by a high gas evolution rate. The blowing agent composition may be used in effective amounts in formulations containing a foamable polymer to yield an efficiently gas expanded polymeric composition upon exposure to heat. Suitable C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 organic acids for said zinc salts include straight-chain carboxylic acids, and useful organic carboxamides include formamide.

A blowing agent composition is provided comprising an azodicarbonamid; zinc oxide, zinc carbonate or a zinc salt of C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 organic acid; and an aromatic sulfinic acid or a metal salt of an aromatic sulfinic acid. For each hundred parts by weight of the azodicarbonamid, the zinc oxide, zinc carbonate or zinc salt is 0.24-25 parts by weight and the aromatic sulfinic acid or metal salt is from 1-2000 parts by weight for each 100 parts of the zinc oxide, zinc carbonate or zinc salt. The total weight of the zinc oxide, zinc carbonate or zinc salt plus the aromatic sulfinic acid or metal salt is from 20-25 parts by weight.

The nucleating agent is the carbonate or oxide of a metal cation from the group of metals consisting of magnesium, calcium, barium, zinc and lead. The invention also is a method of making the above foam copolymer composition.

Alkali metal borohydride concentrates are prepared by dry blending alkali metal borohydride powder with a dry non-reactive plastic resin, melting and extruding the blended mixture to form an encapsulated alkali metal borohydride concentrate, and then chopping the extrusion into pellets. The pellet concentrate may then be blended into other materials.
