A plate-type heat exchanger comprises a stack of flat tubes each composed of a pair of confronting core plates jointed to each other and defining a fluid passage. A cross sectional area of the fluid passage is increased along the flowing direction of tbe refrigerant. A plurality of ribs are disposed on the fluid passage. A flowing resistance of the ribs which are disposed near an outlet tank is lower than that of the ribs which are disposed near an inlet tank.

A heat pipe including evaporator and condenser sections is located within a stack for reclaiming vaporized metals. The heat pipe is a variable conductance design which employs a communicating reservoir of non-condensable gas for creating a variably positioned interface with the working fluid within the condenser of the heat pipe. The interface varies as a function of the heat load on the condenser and effectively provides a variable control for maintaining efficient, fairly constant heat transfer across the wall of the condenser. Fixed turbulators are mounted to a lower section of the heat pipe for mixing the vaporized metals flowing through the stack thereby increasing the efficiency of heat transfer between the vaporized metals and the heat pipe. The result is a compact and environmentally rugged heat pipe design.

A heat exchange apparatus made up of a plurality of sheets, desirably made of thin film plastic, bonded one to another to form a unitized heat exchange structure. Alternate first pairs of sheets are bonded one to another along a first set of longitudinally extending bond lines positioned at first transverse locations along width dimensions of the sheets. There is a second set of pairs of alternately spaced sheets (made up of adjacent sheets of adjoining first pairs of sheets) which are bonded one to another along a second set of longitudinally extending bond lines positioned transversely intermittent of the first set of longitudinal bond lines. These sheets are expanded from one another to form a plurality of diamond-shaped heat exchange passageways arranged in parallel rows. In the preferred form, each end of the heat exchange structure is bonded into a molded base member, which in turn is connected to a related manifold structure. Each manifold structure has a pair of oppositely positioned manifold chambers leading to parallel alternately spaced feed passages, with each alternate set connecting to a related alternate set of heat exchange passageways.

A heat exchanging unit is provided that includes a closed vessel separated into first and second compartments by a vertical partition plate thereby leaving a passage above the vertical partition plate. The first compartment has a cooling medium inlet pipe connected thereto, and a through pipe, through which a fluid to be cooled is passed. The through pipe is arranged to pass through the first compartment and includes a heat exchange member placed at a location lower than the top of the vertical partition plate. The second compartment is provided with a demister, and a cooling medium gas outlet pipe connected to the demister. A cooling medium liquid outlet pipe is connected to the second compartment. The heat exchanging unit is preferably used as part of a combined heat exchanging apparatus formed by combining the heat exchanging unit with a mist processing unit, or as part of a multistage heat exchanging apparatus formed by integrating two or more of the heat exchanging units.

Hot effluent gas from a burner or combustor passes over a pair of nested helical coils forming a steam generator 1 and a vapor mixing conduit 2. Liquid fuel is injected at 12 into a stream of superheated steam and vaporizes. The resulting mixture is combustible. In order to meter small amounts of fuel and water at constant pressure for fine adjustment of the fuel/water ratio in the vaporized mixture, a geared pump 15, 16 is provided in each of the water supply line 6 and the fuel supply line 7, feeding a respective injection tube or nozzle 11, 12. The injection tubes terminate respectively in the steam generator 1 and in the water vapor conduit 3, in a hot zone produced by the hot effluent gas. Preferably, magnetic valves 17, 18 are provided, downstream of each of pumps 15, 16, and are controlled as to frequency and opening time by a central control unit 19.
