The reception apparatus includes a plurality of light receivers having different spectral characteristics, a chromaticity coordinates calculator for calculating a chromaticity coordinates value according to a received light intensity detected by each of the light receivers, and a demodulator for demodulating the digital value from the chromaticity coordinates value.

Segments of the adaptive stream are encoded so that the player is able to locate and request a specific one of the available audio tracks using byte range requests or the like. Audio content can be removed from video segments, or at least moved to the end of the segments so that a byte range request obtains just the video content when the default audio is not desired. The audio content can be obtained from a separate audio segment. Indeed, multiple audio tracks can be packaged into a common audio segment so that byte range requests can obtain just the particular audio track desired.

In a cable television system in accordance with the invention, program materials are made available to subscribers in a neighborhood on an as needed basis. Specifically, when a subscriber at a set-top terminal selects a program channel to watch, the selection request is transmitted to a headend of the system. In response to such a request, a controller in the headend determines whether the material of the selected program channel has been made available to the neighborhood. If it has been made available, the controller identifies to the set-top terminal the carrier which is carrying the requested program material, and to which the set-top terminal tunes to obtain the requested program material. Otherwise, the controller assigns an unused carrier to carry the requested program material, and informs the set-top terminal of the identity of the newly assigned carrier. The controller also retires those carriers assigned for the program channels which are no longer watched by the subscribers in the neighborhood.

In a transmitting section for a video signal transmitting/receiving system for transmitting digital video signals using a plurality of transmission channels, video guard band signals are inserted into video signals associated with the transmission channels immediately before transition from a blanking region to an effective video region. In a receiving section for the system, the inserted video guard band signals are detected for the respective transmission channels. A skew among the transmission channels is detected based on the detection result. To synchronize the video guard band signals among all the transmission channels, with reference to one of the video signals associated with a transmission channel with the longest delay (i.e., delayed by one clock cycle 1T), a delay of 1T is given to the other video signals. As a result, even if a skew occurs among the transmission channels, correct pixel data is displayed.

An interface architecture for interconnecting a plurality of video display devices together over a high speed digital communication link having limited bandwidth provides at each node for transmitting during a "transmit mode"; (1) sequential pixels of digital data (COMVIDOUT) comprising separate luminance and chrominance fields, from a digital TV source associated with each display node which data represents a scaled video window, (2) the local system clock (SCLK), (3) vertical and horizontal communication sync signals (COMVSOUT and COMSHOUT), (4) luminance and chrominance clock enable signals (COMYOCE and COMCOCE) based on a scaling algorithm utilized in the transmitting video device to insure that both the proper pixels and the proper luminance and chrominance fields associated with these pixels are selected by the communications device for transmission. Further, the interface architecture at each display node provides for receiving during a "receive mode", (5) video input data pixels (COMVIDIN), (6) a video input data clock enable signal from the communications adapter (COMVINCE) which controls the storage of the received video data window in the local frame buffer, (7) horizontal and vertical video input sync signals from the communications adapter (COMHSIN and COMVSIN) for properly synchronizing the storing of the received video input data from the communications adapter into the frame buffer beginning ata predetermined address therein. The system utilizes, to a great extent, exisiting hardware in conventional video display device architectures and associated communications adapters such that a versatile generally applicable transmission system is achievable requiring a minimum of additional control hardware and software.
