Audio/video data is transmitted from the server under control of a transport mechanism. A server buffer is prefilled with a predetermined amount of the audio/video data. When the transport mechanism causes data to be sent to the user's computer, it is sent more rapidly than it is played out by the user system. The audio/video data in the user buffer accumulates; and interruptions in playback as well as temporary modem delays are avoided.

To decrease the use of computing resources, processing jobs are started and stopped based on user demand. When a multimedia stream is received from a broadcaster, the processing system does not start processing the multimedia broadcast stream until a request for a processed stream is received. The processing system automatically terminates processing jobs when the audience of a processed stream drops to zero or some other stop condition is met.

In one embodiment, the direct memory-to-memory to streaming protocol driver is a Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA). In general, the RDMA to streaming protocol driver utilizes an RDMA-enabled network interface to obtain media content from a remote content distribution server. In order to emulate a streaming protocol layer of a network stack such as, for example, the User Datagram Protocol (UDP), the RDMA to streaming protocol driver encapsulates the media content according to the streaming protocol to provide streaming media content. The streaming media content is then provided to an associated streaming protocol-based playback function.

Further, the translator can be configured as a logical endpoint where a first interface having an input/output pair uses the first format and a second interface having another input/output pair uses the second format. Systems and methods are provided that combine Open Mobile Alliance Mobile Broadcast Services (OMA BCAST) with different bearers, such as China Multimedia Mobile Broadcasting (CMMB) by associating service-related identifiers within an OMA BCAST Electronic Service Guide (ESG) with CMMB bearer-specific parameters. Furthermore, associating IP source and/or destination address pairs of a service with the location of the service within the CMMB bearer can be achieved and used with unicast, multicast, and broadcast environments. Further still, systems and methods are provided that allow for ESG bootstrapping, where a desired electronic service guide can be discovered by bootstrapping, e.g., OMA BCAST ESG.
