摘要: A hybrid single or multi-wavelength laser using an optical gain element, such as a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), for example a QD RSOA, and a semiconductor, e.g. silicon, photonics chip is demonstrated. A plurality, e.g. four, lasing modes at a predetermined, e.g. 2 nm, spacing and less than 3 dB power non-uniformity may be observed, with over 20 mW of total output power. Each lasing peak can be successfully modulated at 10 Gb/s. At 10−9 BER, the receiver power penalty is less than 2.6 dB compared to a conventional commercial laser. An expected application is the provision of a comb laser source for WDM transmission in optical interconnection systems.

摘要: Methods, systems, and apparatus, for an external cavity FP laser. In one aspect, an apparatus is provided that includes a FP laser diode; a Faraday rotator (FR) coupled to receive an optical output of the FP laser diode and that rotates a polarization of the optical output; an optical fiber coupled at a first end to receive the output of the FR; a WDM filter coupled to a second end of the optical fiber to receive the optical signal from the optical fiber; and a FRM coupled directly or indirectly to an output of the WDM filter, wherein an optical output of the WDM filter is partially reflected by the FRM such that the polarization of a reflected beam is rotated, and wherein the reflected optical signal then passes through the FR with its polarization being rotated by the FR before it is injected back into the FP laser diode.

摘要: A cooling device that enables the tip position of optical fiber to be adjusted and is able to efficiently cool an entirely of the optical fiber. This cooling device is provided with a cooling base plate, a fiber holder and an adjustment member. The cooling base plate has a recessed accommodating part. The fiber holder is disposed in the recessed accommodating part so as to be freely movable in a first direction. The adjustment member is disposed in a gap between the fiber holder and an end face of the recessed accommodating part and is movable in the first direction by moving in a second direction that intersects the first direction. The adjustment member abuts against both the end face of the recessed accommodating part and an end face of the fiber holder.

摘要: In one embodiment of the invention, a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) in a laser ring is chosen to provide low polarization-dependent gain (PDG) and a booster semiconductor optical amplifier, outside of the ring, is chosen to provide high polarization-dependent gain. The use of a semiconductor optical amplifier with low polarization-dependent gain nearly eliminates variations in the polarization state of the light at the output of the laser, but does not eliminate the intra-sweep variations in the polarization state at the output of the laser, which can degrade the performance of the SS-OCT system.

摘要: A compact, wavelength-stabilized laser source is provided by utilizing a specialty gain element (i.e., formed to include a curved waveguide topology), where a separate wavelength stabilization component (for example, a fiber Bragg grating (FBG)) is used one of the mirrors for the laser cavity. That is, the FBG takes the place of the physical “front facet” of the gain element, and functions to define the laser cavity in the first instance, while also utilizing the grating structure to impart the desired wavelength stability to the output from the packaged laser source. As a result, the FBG is disposed within the same package used to house the gain element and provides a wavelength-stabilized laser source in a compact form.

摘要: A white light spectroscopy system includes a super continuum light source having an input light source including semiconductor diodes to generate an input beam having a wavelength shorter than 2.5 microns. The light source includes a cladding-pumped fiber optical amplifier to receive the input beam, and a photonic crystal fiber to receive the amplified optical beam to broaden the spectral width to 100 nm or more forming an output beam in the visible wavelength range. The output beam is pulsed with a repetition rate of 1 Megahertz or higher. The system also includes a lens and/or mirror to receive the output beam, to send the output beam to a scanning stage, and to deliver the received output beam to a sample. A detection system includes dispersive optics and narrow band filters followed by one or more detectors to permit approximately simultaneous measurement of at least two wavelengths from the sample.
