A hybrid switch assembly includes a number of conductor assemblies, each conductor assembly including a movable conductor, and a stationary conductor. Further, each movable conductor is structured to move between an open, first position, wherein each movable conductor is spaced from and not in electrical communication with an associated stationary conductor, and a closed, second position, wherein each movable conductor is coupled to and in electrical communication with an associated stationary conductor. A number of the conductor assemblies further include a power electronic switch assembly. Each power electronic switch assembly includes an isolation contact assembly. Each isolation contact assembly is selectively coupled to, and in electronic communication with, the stationary conductor and the movable conductor.

An arc suppression circuit for a switch carrying a load current includes a MOSFET having a drain connected to a first contact of the switch and a source connected to a second contact of the switch. A biasing capacitor is coupled at one end to the drain and at another end through a damping resistor to the gate, such that when the switch contacts are opened, the interrupted load current passes through the biasing capacitor to charge an inherent gate-to-source MOSFET capacitance for turning on the MOSFET and shunting the load current around the switch. A biasing resistor, connected between the gate and the source of the MOSFET, subsequently discharges the gate-to-source capacitance, turning off the MOSFET and terminating the shunted load current after the contacts of the switch have separated by a distance sufficient to preclude arcing. A zener diode, having its cathode connected to the gate of the MOSFET and its anode connected to the source of the MOSFET, quickly discharges the biasing capacitor when the switch contacts are reclosed.

When the contacts open, the combination of added Miller capacitance and the gate-to-emitter capacitance of the IGBT results in the IGBT turning on. The IGBT is quickly turned off thereafter by a second transistor, which turns on as the voltage across the suppression circuit rises following turn-on of the IGBT. The turning on of the second transistor results in the first power transistor quickly and abruptly turning off so that relatively little of the load energy is dissipated in the power transistor.

This disclosure deals with a circuit for substantially reducing or eliminating switch contact damage due to arcing when opening or closing the switch contacts under heavy AC current load conditions. This is accomplished by providing a normally open shunt path across the contacts and momentarily closing the path at the instant of arcing. The shunt path includes contactless switch means which is normally open. Opening of the switch contacts effects turning on of the switch means and transfer of the load current thereto, thus quenching the arc. At the next subsequent zero crossing of the AC wave, the switch means is again opened. Similar operation occurs when the switch contacts close and an arc starts to develop due to contact bounce.
