    摘要: A method and apparatus for hydrostatically testing connections between segments of pipe whereby pressurized hydrostatic test fluid is selectively applied to the connection such that the pressures are principally applied in the vicinity of the radial orifices leading into the sealing elements of the connection and not radially to the inner or outer annular surfaces of the connection in the vicinity of the sealing elements of the connection which would tend to substantially affect the bearing pressure of the sealing elements. In addition, a method and apparatus for selectively applying pressurized hydrostatic test fluid such that the pressures are applied to those areas where the bearing pressure of the sealing elements of the connection is sensitive to the applied pressures, thus manipulating the bearing pressure and controlling the sealing capacity of the connection during hydrostatic leak testing.

A pressure signal indicative of the pore size on the external surface of the enhanced evaporator tube is provided to a microcomputer system which processes the signal indicative of the pore size and compares the signal to a predetermined pore size signal to determine when the pore size is within a selected tolerance. The microcomputer generates a control signal to adjust the enhancing process if the microcomputer system determines that the pore size of the manufactured tube is different than the selected pore size.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for measuring the pore size on the surface of an externally enhanced evaporator tube. The apparatus is the pneumatic equivalent of an electrical wheatstone bridge circuit. Air is fed into two parallel legs of a circuit. The first leg has a variable flow control valve in series with a reference fixture having a fixed orifice therein. The other leg has a variable flow control valve in series with a test fixture matingly engaged with the enhanced tube to be measured. A differential pressure transducer measures the difference between the air pressure drop across the enhanced tube and the air pressure drop across the reference orifice plate. Therefore, any changes in the pressure, temperature, or humidity of the supply air will affect both legs in the same manner, so the reading of the transducer will not be affected by changes in supply air.

    摘要: A leak indicating conduit for conveying fluid includes an inner tube and an outer tube, in which the inner tube is separated from the outer tube by a space maintained at a pressure having a predetermined value from the range of values less than the pressure of the conveyed fluid and the ambient pressure, and greater than the pressure of the conveyed fluid and the ambient pressure. A leak indicating device is in continuous communication with the space for indicating a change of pressure in the space from the predetermined value. The indicating device includes a chamber in which an expansible bellows is mounted in communication with the space. The expansible bellows includes a movable plate supporting an indicating element for movement between a concealed first position, thereby indicating no change of pressure from the predetermined value, and a second, visible position, thereby indicating a change of pressure. An electrical switch for operating a separate indicating or control device can be mounted adjacent the expansible bellows, so that it is operated by the bellows as the bellows moves between its first and second positions. Where the leak indicating conduit is used as an expansion joint, the ends of the inner and outer tubes are secured to the pipes by annular attachment welds. Tapered rings are welded over the attachment welds and an aperture is defined in the outer tube, under the tapered rings for detecting leaks in the attachment welds.

    摘要: A body having a longitudinal opening through which a tubular member may extend for testing, such as two tubular members connected together by threaded connections or a coupling. Positioned along the longitudinal opening in the body are longitudinally spaced annular seal means. The body includes passage means for conducting fluid pressure against the outer circumferential surface of each of the annular seal means. Back-up means are mounted in association with each annular seal means for inward and outward radial movement with such seal means, each of the back-up means comprising anti-extrusion means to prevent significant extrusion of the seal means responsive to pressure imposed thereon. Means on each of the back-up means and on the seal means coact to urge the back-up means into tighter frictional engagement with the tubular members upon the application of a continuing radial force to the seal means by the pressurized actuating fluid after the seal means are moved into sealing engagement with the tubular member. The application of the pressurized actuating fluid against the outer circumferential surface of the annular seal means forces the seal means and the back-up means carried thereby into engagement with the tubular member whereby the spaced annular seal means and the body form a closed chamber which seals the exterior of the tubular member. The body includes a further passageway for supplying a pressurized test fluid into the closed chamber for externally testing the tubular member.

The body is provided with passage means for conducting fluid to move the seal means radially of the body opening to seal against tubular members in the body opening.The tubular members are connected together by suitable means such as a coupling, weld, or other arrangement prior to positioning the connection between the seal means and after the seal means has sealed off the connection therebetween, the body includes additional passage means for conducting fluid pressure to increase the fluid pressure externally of the connection to a pressure significantly greater than the internal pressure to externally test the connection by instrumentally or visually detecting any resultant inflow of the pressurized external fluid.Where the method of the present invention is employed for leak testing a thread-connected, multiple seal pipe joint having at least one internal and at least one external sealing arrangement, the connection between the tubular members may be only partially made up to a predetermined condition at which a primary or initial internal seal is established in the connection without engaging the external seal. After the joint has been externally tested in this condition, the test seals may be withdrawn from the tubular member and the connection completed to full make-up torque, and the joint again externally sealed and fluid pressure applied to externally test the connection.In one embodiment the body of the present invention is provided with additional annular seal means intermediate said first and second spaced seal means and additional passage means is provided for communicating fluid to move said additional annular seal means radially into engagement with the connection to isolate each end thereof. The body includes still additional passage means for communicating with the connection and isolated connection end on each side of the additional annular seal means whereby each end of the connection may be separately externally tested by fluid pressure for leaks by detecting any resultant inflow of the pressurized external fluid at either connection end.In another embodiment the arrangement may be employed to test tubular members at a mill for quality control, or tested on location prior to use.The annular seal means preferably includes an elastomer body and back up means carried thereby to aid in inhibiting extrusion of the elastomer when fluid pressure is applied to the chamber between the seals to externally test the connection.

    摘要: A field testable instrument housing connection is made up of an integral instrument housing assembly that includes both an instrument housing and a separate one-piece compression nut portion and a separate modified reducing union. The instrument housing has a mating geometry that is disposed over the downhole portion of the separate modified reducing union and the separate one-piece compression nut portion is then disposed over both the uphole portion of the instrument housing and a downhole portion of the modified reducing union. The complete assembly of the modified reducing union, including primary and secondary seals in combination with the integral instrument housing assembly provide then both an annular seal and a seal of the instrument housing. The entire assembly is field testable via provided test ports.

    摘要: A particulate-accommodating fluid flow directing apparatus comprises a failure detection housing containing a flow directing insert, the housing serving as a pressure boundary; failure at any location along the insert being detectable by means associated with the housing. The insert can be manufactured of erosion resistant materials, including non-ductile materials such as ceramics. The insert is sealed to the housing at an inlet and a discharge forming a pressure chamber between the insert and housing. The pressure chamber can be maintained at a pad pressure complementary to the process pressure, the pad pressure being maintained and monitored for indication of insert failure.
