Abstract: An ammunition cartridge comprised of a projectile inserted in, and mechanically connected to, a metal cartridge case assembly having a propulsion chamber and a base, and an energetic propellant disposed in the propulsion chamber, includes a base plug in which is mounted an igniter with an energetic primer. During manufacture of the cartridge, a fusible support ring is incorporated into a metal cavity. The cartridge base includes a cavity allowing the fusible material to solidify at ambient temperatures. When exposed to heat from an external fire, the fusible support plug liquefies losing its strength and subsequently, when a propellant or primer off-gasses or auto-ignites the pressure from the reaction ejects a metal plug or lid from the cartridge case base, creating a void that allows the propellant and primer to combust in an unconfined space.

Abstract: Various types of structures, along with associated systems, are disclosed herein and configured for responding to an energy wave for changing a state of a mechanism to which said structures are operatively coupled. In at least one embodiment, the structure provides a material selectively changeable upon exposure to the energy wave to cause at least a portion of the material to mechanically degrade from a first state to a second state. When the material is in the first state, the material forms a mechanical or electrical link with the mechanism such that a force or an electrical current can be transmitted through the structure. When the material is in the second state, degradation of at least the portion of the material disrupts the mechanical or electrical link and inhibits transmission of the force or electrical current through the structure.

Abstract: A projectile includes a toughened polymer resin, a curative agent and a particulate filler. The curative agent cures the toughened polymer resin. The particulate filler is distributed throughout the resin. The particulate filler has a density greater than a density of the resin. The particulate filler can be 70 to 80 percent by weight of the total projectile composition. The particulate filler can include at least one of copper, tungsten, lead, iron and steel. The projectile has an average density that is less than the density of lead. Additionally, the toughened polymer resin can be 20 to 30 percent by weight of the total projectile composition.

Abstract: The invention relates to fragmenting projectiles. In order that all projectiles of a*waffe*Bug projectile type have the same point of impact, i.e., the same projectile weight, the same center of gravity and the same geometry, and that the marksman can set the fragmentation behavior solely by selecting the projectile, fragmenting projectiles having defined fragmentation in steps for the same point of impact, designed as two projectile types, namely as partially fragmenting projectiles or as jacketed projectiles, are proposed, wherein all fragmenting projectiles of a projectile type have the same projectile weight, the same center of gravity, and the same geometry, a fragmentable core is arranged in the front nose region for both projectile types, all fragmentable cores of a projectile type have the same density and differ from each other in the weight of the fragmentable core depending on the fragmentation, and all projectiles of a projectile type having the same weight of the fragmentable core have an identical marking that can be seen or felt from the outside.

Abstract: A munition, such as a projectile formed of at least one reactive material. In one embodiment, the projectile includes a body portion formed of at least one reactive material composition wherein the at least one reactive material composition defines at least a portion of an exterior surface of the projectile. In other words, a portion of the reactive material may be left “unbuffered” or exposed to the barrel of a gun or weapon from which it is launched and similarly exposed to a target with which the projectile subsequently impacts. In one embodiment, the projectile may be formed with a jacket surrounding a portion of the reactive material to provide additional structural integrity. The projectile may be formed by casting or pressing the reactive material into a desired shape, or the reactive material may be extruded into a near-net shape and then machined into the desired shape.
