Abstract: An ammunition cartridge comprised of a projectile inserted in, and mechanically connected to, a metal cartridge case assembly having a propulsion chamber and a base, and an energetic propellant disposed in the propulsion chamber, includes a base plug in which is mounted an igniter with an energetic primer. During manufacture of the cartridge, a fusible support ring is incorporated into a metal cavity. The cartridge base includes a cavity allowing the fusible material to solidify at ambient temperatures. When exposed to heat from an external fire, the fusible support plug liquefies losing its strength and subsequently, when a propellant or primer off-gasses or auto-ignites the pressure from the reaction ejects a metal plug or lid from the cartridge case base, creating a void that allows the propellant and primer to combust in an unconfined space.

Abstract: A method of making a fragmenting structure for an explosive device includes placing a volume of fragments of a deformable metal material into a press mold, the fragments having sufficient surface adhesiveness to adhere to each other upon being compressed together, e.g., by coating the fragments with adhesive. The fragments are compressed together in the press mold to form the fragmenting structure as a rigid and substantially void-free structure of compression-deformed, mutually adhering metal fragments, the fragmenting structure being sized and shaped for subsequent incorporation into the explosive device. An explosive device includes an explosive charge and a fragmenting structure adjacent to the explosive charge, the fragmenting structure being a rigid and substantially void-free structure of compression-deformed, mutually adhering metal fragments. The structure may have been manufactured by the disclosed method.

Abstract: Disclosed is a cartridge case for various caliber ammunition that consists essentially of a powdered metal and/or powdered metal alloy that is formed into the cartridge case through an injection mold processing. Also disclosed is a method for forming a cartridge case, which may include use of Metal Injection Molding (“MIM”) processes to produce the cartridge case which retains a primer, propellant, and/or a bullet. The method can include metal injection molding an initial part, and also at least one of tapering and trimming the initial part to form the finished cartridge case. Further embodiments can include the use of Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis to develop an optimized MIM design.

Abstract: The present invention provides an injection molded primer insert for polymer ammunition comprising: a top surface opposite a bottom surface; a primer flash hole aperture positioned in the top surface extending through to the bottom surface; a substantially cylindrical coupling element extending away from the bottom surface forming an interior surface inside the substantially cylindrical coupling element and an exterior surface; a primer recess in the top surface that extends toward the bottom surface, a primer flash aperture positioned in the primer recess to extend through the bottom surface, and a flange that extends circumferentially about an outer edge of the top surface, wherein the flange is adapted to receive a polymer overmolding.
