Abstract: A system and method for providing domestic hot water and/or space heating within a building. The system comprises at least one storage vessel comprising a removable cover, wherein an internal volume of the storage vessel is fluidly connected to a source of sewage and/or wastewater from one or more buildings, a water-source heat pump, at least one solar thermal collector, at least one heat transfer circuit. The at least one heat transfer circuit includes at least one fluid line containing a heat transfer fluid, and a controller for controlling an operation of the system. The system has an operation mode in which the controller of the system is configured to connect the at least one solar thermal collector to the at least one storage vessel via the at least one fluid line. The system stores a heat output from the at least one solar thermal collector in sewage and/or wastewater.

Abstract: A transparent solar heat absorbing apparatus includes a transparent member allowing sunlight to pass through, a wavelength selective member disposed beneath the transparent member, a heating tank formed between the transparent member and the wavelength selective member. The wavelength selective member allows light in a transmission range including at least a visible wavelength range to pass through and reflects light in a reflection range including at least an infrared wavelength range. At least one of the transparent member and the wavelength selective member has a waveform structure on at least one of its upper surface and bottom surface.

Abstract: A solar energy system for collecting solar energy in the form of solar radiation and for storing and utilizing the energy collected including stationary solar energy collecting units each comprising a generally concave reflective surface for reflecting solar radiation onto a plurality of energy collectors positioned within the surface, the surface and the energy collectors positioned with respect to each other to provide varying concentration of solar radiation on each of the energy collectors depending on the angle of incidence of the solar radiation on the solar energy collecting unit. Each of the energy collectors is associated with a pipe for fluid circulation and solar energy absorption through which fluid to be heated by the solar radiation is circulated. The pipe may be surrounded by a glass enclosure and the space between the pipe and the glass enclosure may be evacuated to provide insulation. The surface of the glass enclosure may be reflective to provide for further concentration of solar radiation upon the pipe. The system includes thermostatically controlled valves associated with each of the energy collectors for selectively transferring away only that fluid which has been heated to a predetermined temperature.

Abstract: A solar collector has a liquid system independent of a household hot water heater system, the two systems transferring heat in a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger has an open top inner tank enclosed in a closed outer tank, a coil connected to the hot water tank system circulates under main pressure in a coil in the annular space between the inner and outer tanks. Liquid from the collector enters at the bottom of the annular space, flows upward around the coil and overflows the top of the inner tank. A pump draws liquid from the bottom of the inner tank for circulation through the solar collector system. The liquid in the collector system drains by gravity into the inner tank at any time that the collector circulating pump is not operating, thus providing freeze protection during all normal operations and also at such time that a power failure may occur.

Abstract: Disclosed are methods and functional elements for enhanced thermal management of predominantly enclosed spaces. In particular, the invention enables the construction of buildings with reduced power requirements for heating and/or air-conditioning systems since under certain conditions less energy for heating or cooling is required to maintain, within certain boundaries, desirable temperatures inside such buildings, habitats, or other enclosed spaces.
In some instances the invention is in part based on dynamically changing functional elements with variable properties, or effective properties, in terms of their electromagnetic radiative behavior and/or their thermal energy storage properties, or the spatial distribution of the stored thermal energy, which permits the application of methods and algorithms to control the overall thermal behavior of the entire structure in such a way that desired levels of inside temperature can be reached with reduced consumption of external energy (typically electricity, gas, oil, or coal).
In some instances no conventional heating of cooling is required at all, whereas in other instances the expenditure of external energy for conventional heating or cooling is reduced. In some instances the invention enables the reduction of the time to reach desired temperatures inside such buildings, habitats, or other predominantly enclosed spaces.
In some instances the obtained sensor data may be used to detect the occurrence or imminently predicted occurrence of a catastrophic event, including but not limited to fire or flooding, internal or external to the predominantly enclosed space.
In some embodiments this information may support any single or any combination of locally or remotely alerting humans, alerting rescue units, activating countermeasures, uploading at least partially said sensor data to off-site computers, determining the cause(s) of said catastrophic event, determining liability, determining insure payments, determining insurance premiums.-
