An apparatus that takes advantage of the adherence of hydrocarbonates to specific material and its fluidity as influenced by the temperature. The performances of the apparatus are related to the interaction of two horizontal concentric cylinders one rotating around the other and containing both collecting and recovery means, working simultaneously. A three way oil collection is achieved by the cylinder's exterior surfaces, by large conical discs and by oil scoops located between the two cylinders. Said collecting means are integrated with a central heating system and with temperature controlled recovery devices such as oil deflectors with scrapers and oil recovery reservoir with screw, so that any type of oil can be recovered efficiently from or near the water surface even in cold weather.

The oil is adsorbed on roughened or grooved surfaces of rubber polytetrafluorethylene, polyethylene, neoprene, steel, iron, copper, aluminium, glass, acrylics. The rotor may be heated. A magnet may be incorporated in the rotor to remove magnetic particles. The oil may be removed by squeegee scrapers, squeeze type rollers or jets of air. Examples of rotors are given in Figs. 5-11 (not shown). The process may be reversed to adsorb the water on a hydrophilic rotor from a bath of oil.

An oil spill skimmer for removing heavy hydrocarbons from bodies of water, having a plurality of oleophilic oil separation devices, a housing and frame structure that is suitably supported above a body of water, an adjustable wave damper supported by the housing at a front of the skimmer, an at least one flow inducer supported by the housing at a rear of the skimmer, and ballast-adjustable tanks. The at least one flow inducer for inducing inflow such that water is pulled at the front of the skimmer and directed out a bottom of the skimmer while collecting the spillage in a collection area. The ballast can be moved in and out of the tanks to increase or decrease buoyancy and influence the wave riding or wave heave of the skimmer.
