In a system for twisting together several ends of heavy treated glass yarns from separate supply packages, an improved means for detecting interruption in the supply of an individual end which employs individual tachometer generators associated with and driven by each supply package. Each tachometer generator produces an electrical signal whose strength is proportional to the rotational speed of its associated package. A detector circuit senses when any one such signal falls below a predetermined minimum, and triggers an interruption of the electrical power supply to the strand feeding and twisting apparatus to shut down the entire system.

Open end spinning apparatus is provided which includes a magnetic reed switch for controlling sliver feed. A yarn sensor magnet attached to a movable yarn sensor engageable with a running yarn is disposed so as to open the magnetic switch and interrupt sliver feed upon occurrence of a yarn breakage. In order to prevent the need for moving the yarn after a piecing operation so as to properly engage the yarn sensor, an auxiliary magnet is provided which is movable into position to magnetically move the yarn sensor away from a blocking position in front of the yarn takeoff passage at a spinning unit. The auxiliary magnet is controlled by way of its position, and/or its magnetic field strength, so as to also selectively control the operation of the magnetic reed switch during piecing operations, while maintaining the sensor magnet, and yarn sensor out of a blocking position in front of the yarn takeoff passage.

Defects in electronic components in the circuit of the yarn monitor or in the sensor can result in a continuous yarn traveling signal to the control circuit of the spinning station despite a yarn break. The present invention therefore provides a receiver (5') for contactless receiving the yarn signal of the monitor and an oscillator (16) which can be actuated and deactuated based on the receiver output signal. An integrated circuit (22) is connected between the receiver and the oscillator (16) for generating and maintaining an actuating signal to the oscillator for generating oscillations thereby, and an alternating-voltage coupling (20) is connected between the oscillator and the control circuit of the spinning station for transmitting only an alternating voltage.
