The present invention relates to a polysaccharide composition for protection of surfaces comprising an aqueous solution of at least two components, the first component (A) being a high molecular weight polysaccharide or a mixture of high molecular weight polysaccharides having an average molecular weight Mw of at least 100 000, and being capable of forming a gel, and the second component (B) being a low molecular weight polysaccharide or a mixture of low molecular weight polysaccharides having an average molecular weight Mw of 400-75 000, and being capable of inhibiting gel formation in said composition. The use of a binder system comprising compounds containing aluminium oxide and silicon oxide for producing a hydrophilic building product, characterized in that the sum of the oxides calculated as Al2O3 and SiO2 in the binder system is ≧40% by weight, based on the water-free binder system, and the contact angle of an oil drop placed on the surface of the cured building product is ≧90°, where the contact angle determination is carried out under water, is proposed. The said hydrophilicity makes the building product easy to clean, with simple rinsing with water often being sufficient.

A method for removing soiling and graffiti markings from a barrier coat previously formed on an underlying surface is provided, wherein the method preserves rather than sacrifices the barrier coat. The method includes applying a solvent system which includes at least one substantially non-toxic organic solvent such as 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone to an area of the barrier coat. A method is also provided to improve the resistance of a protective barrier coat to graffiti markings and other soiling over time and thereby facilitate any necessary cleaning of this barrier coat. The improvement in the case of wax coatings is achieved by including in the wax, at least one protective chemical agent selected from the group consisting of wax-soluble/water-insoluble UV light absorbers, wax-soluble/water-insoluble free-radical and peroxy-radical scavengers, and wax-soluble/water-insoluble wax antioxidants.
