Provided are an apparatus and a method for river water purification using a treatment soil layer and a permeable filtering medium layer. The river water purification apparatus includes a treatment soil layer and a permeable filtering medium layer which are sequentially and alternately stacked. The treatment soil layer includes a plurality of unit soil layers which are arranged at intervals. A reservoir part which stores a predetermined amount of river water and supplies the river water to an inside of the unit soil layer is provided in an upper end part of the unit soil layer. The permeable filtering medium layer has a higher hydraulic conductivity than that of the treatment soil layer. The river water purification apparatus increases a treatment flux of river water regardless of a coefficient of water permeability of soil and effectively removes nitrogen, phosphorus and nutrient salts by stably forming an anaerobic condition.

A soil covered sewage treatment system for eliminating organic impurities from a household sewage is provided. The house hold sewage treatment system is covered with 1) a top layer planted with grasses and flowers of the local area, 2) a second top layer filled with the local soil, and 3) a third layer from the top that is divided into six sections and each section is separated from each other by walls that are extended from each baths and is filled with chips of stones and marbles. The sewage treatment system is comprised of; a decanting and denitrification bath, a primary oxidation bath, a decanting bath, a secondary oxidation bath, and a discharging bath with partial recycling pipes which are buried under the third layer. Microorganisms living in the local soil facilitate denitrification and oxidation of a household sewage. The roots of grass covering the top surface of the reaction baths absorb and utilize water, impurities, and decomposed compounds as fertilizer. Baths covered with normal garden vegetations and flowers endow environmentally pleasant view.

A system and method for removing pollutants from wastewater. The system includes a constructed wetland cell in which the filtered wastewater is flowed generally vertically. The flow of wastewater is unsaturated through the wetland cell to aerate the wastewater. The wastewater may be further aerated by a blower or injector. The treated wastewater from the wetland cell is blended with untreated wastewater, then either recirculated through the wetland cell or conveyed to a disposal system.

The effluent then flows to the anaerobic tank where it is anaerobically treated to remove nitrogen in the wastewater. A filter may be added to the discharge line from the anaerobic tank to remove any suspended solids emitted with the effluent from the anaerobic tank.

The incoming wastewater is furnished to the recirculating packed media filter intermittently to permit air into the filter for maintaining high levels of oxygen for bacteria action. The recirculating packed media filter is followed by a subsurface flow constructed wetland. The wastewater entering the apparatus of the invention is divided into two parts so that 5 to 25 percent of the incoming flow bypasses the recirculating packed media filter and goes directly into the subsurface flow constructed wetland to encourage bacteria action that converts nitrates into gaseous nitrogen.
