A safety method is provided for a railway network that is divided into track sections by track elements, and can be travelled by vehicles in accordance with data from components of a track atlas. The vehicles request steps, from selections of the track elements, for assignment as a travel path element, and in which each of the selected track elements automatically assigns itself as a travel path element for each vehicle that requests the steps for assignment as a travel path element, under predetermined conditions. In order to optimize the loading of the track atlas relating to each vehicle, the data at least of one of the components of the track atlas is stored locally by the track elements in parts relating to the track elements in the form of datasets. A safety system for the railway network implements the safety method.

The method includes planning, by a regulating unit, of a vehicle's mission, transmitting said mission to the vehicle. The onboard controller of identifying a group of resources permitting the vehicle to continue its mission, reserving the identified resources with the ground controllers, once all of the resources are allocated, interlocking each resource in a required state, verifying that each resource is reserved and is in the required state and, when this verification is positive, extending permission for the vehicle to move on the path corresponding to said group of resources.

The information is sent by the first control unit in the form of a command that is transferred to a first communication unit on board the first vehicle. The first communication unit establishes a transmission link outside the vehicle with a second communication unit linked to a module for executing the command. The second communication unit and the execution module are located either on the ground or on board a second vehicle that has a second control unit. In the event of a transmission to the second communication unit on the ground, the execution module on the ground is controlled in a governed slave mode for the command by a master mode of the first control unit. In the event of a transmission to the second on-board communication unit, the execution module on board the second vehicle is controlled in a governed slave mode to permit the command to be executed in a master mode of the first control unit, thereby at least temporarily placing a second control unit on board the second vehicle in a slave mode to execute the command.

The on-board controllers communicate with each other as well as individual wayside devices and a data storage system to identify available assets needed to move along the guideway and to reserve these assets for their associated vehicle.
