The stator comprises multiple commutator laminations for the commutation of windings disposed on the rotor and is activated by a pulsed or linearly controllable power source. The motor shaft is connected to a radially driven load, in particular a pump, which has a nonlinear torque curve via a motor revolution. A waviness signal is obtained from a voltage potential applied to the motor and/or from the motor current and rotor position information is obtained from the curve of said waviness signal.

The steps include producing a relative motor characteristic diagram for a series of the units. The diagram includes the data of motor-rotational-speed-dependent parameters, intensity of the motor actuation, and parameters relating to the level of the motor load. Further steps include; determining individual motor characteristic variables, determining a current rotational-speed-dependent parameter of an individual motor during the operation of the pump, and calculating a pressure which is characteristic of the braking system, by means of the diagram parameter of the individual motor and the value of the current motor actuation which determines the intensity of the motor actuation, wherein the individual motor characteristic variables are taken into account.

To that end, the driving rpm of the pressure generator is preferably varied. The trigger signal for the drive motor can be ascertained by an electronic control unit from measurement outcomes from sensors within the vehicle brake system, or it can be estimated with the aid of a hydraulic volume model stored in memory in the control unit. The trigger signal can be controlled or regulated.

By this, a wheel cylinder maintains hydraulic pressure capable of generating the required braking force. As a result, the pump motor is not necessarily always driven when the required braking force is generated, and the operating time period of the pump motor is reduced. As a result, a load on the pump motor is reduced to enhance durability of the pump motor.
