A viscoelastic material is extruded by kneading-and-conveying screws of different respective diameters positioned coaxially and telescopingly. A flight trough of a larger-diameter screw has radial orifices allowing a first space swept by the flight of the larger-diameter screw to communicate with a second space swept by a flight of a smaller-diameter screw. A fixed cylindrical tube arranged coaxially with the screws is disposed radially between the first and second spaces within the region in which the screws telescope. The tube has radial apertures therethrough to conduct material from the orifices to the second space. The first space is closed off at an axial end thereof by a wall where foreign substances accumulate that do not pass through the orifices. A passage through the wall can be opened to remove the accumulated substances without interrupting the extrusion operation.

Apparatus is disclosed for the separation of admixtures from contaminated thermoplastic materials. The apparatus has a distributor screw, a retainer chamber and return flow holes for contaminated materials to pass from the retainer chamber into an annular space formed between the distributor screw and the screening element within the pressure chamber. The materials circularly travel around saw-like teeth of the distributor screw and back through the flow holes into the retaining chamber. The retainer chamber and the annular space are openly connected to each other at the inlet side of the pressure chamber. Purified materials exit through one outlet exit and admixtures exit through a second exit.

A method for cleaning thermoplastic material especially for reclaiming thermoplastic material from scrap material which includes in addition to the thermoplastic material, materials having a higher melting point than the thermoplastic, such as metal, thermosetting material, etc. The scrap material which has been treated to remove large particles of metal and/or other hard materials is heated and extruded to thereby provide a confined pressurized stream of melted thermoplastic material containing therein small metallic or other unmelted particles. A portion of the stream of melted material is filtered to provide a filtrate composed of melted thermoplastic material containing therein unmelted materials having a size less than a preselected size. The separated unmelted material remains in the stream and the flow rate of this remainder portion of the stream is controlled or metered so as to maintain the stream under pressure where it is being filtered whereby most of the melted thermoplastic material is caused to flow in the filtrate while the remainder portion carries away the separated unmelted material. The apparatus may be retrofitted on a conventional extruder by adding an extruder screw extension and a cylindrical screening means about the screw extension which will wipe the interior surface of the screen of contanimants. The metering of contaminant bearing stream is preferably by chilling the stream to a semi-solid state and grinding the semi-solid state stream. The preferred screen is formed of a punched plate formed into a cylinder and plated with an abrasion resistant material which covers the sharp edges of the holes with a rounded surface.

An apparatus for filtering thermoplastic synthetic plastic material has a screw (5) bearingly supported within a housing (1) for rotation around its longitudinal axis for the transport and preferably also plasticizing of the synthethic plastic material. This material is supplied to the screw (5) through an intake opening (7) into the housing (1) and leaves the housing (1) through an exit opening (8). The screw (5) is subdivided into two sections (9, 10) disposed one behind the other in axial direction. A filter (40) provided with penetration openings (25) is disposed in the flow of the synthetic plastic material that is disposed between these two sections (9, 10), which filter (40) is disposed within the housing (1) between the two sections (9, 10) of the screw (5) so that it subdivides the interior of the housing. The filter (40) is connected for common rotation with at least one of the screw sections (9, 10). At least one scraper (26) mounted in the housing (1) engages the upstream side of the filter (40) and strips off coarse impurities from the filter when the filter (40) is rotated and conveys the impurities into a collecting space (27) that is in connection with the interior of the housing.

The present invention includes a filtration apparatus for an injection molding machine where the injection molding machine includes a screw housed within a bore for generating molten polymer. A tip member extends axially from the screw. The tip member has radially extending upstream and downstream flanges positioned axially apart from each other. A filter encircles the tip member and is capable of filtering the molten polymer. An annular ring member encircles the tip member and is slidably positioned within the bore between the upstream and downstream flanges. The ring member is capable of sliding between the flanges for directing the molten polymer through the filter or preventing back flow of the molten polymer past the upstream flange. An end stop is positioned within the bore and is capable of engaging and preventing movement of the ring member past the end stop while allowing the downstream flange of the tip member to be translated forwardly therepast to simultaneously space the upstream and downstream flanges apart from the ring member. This allows the molten polymer to bypass the filter for purging contaminants filtered from the molten polymer.
