In a continuous hot strip rolling system in which bars are joined between a roughing train and a finishing train for continuous rolling, the roughing train includes two two-high twin-roll arranged stands each having two pairs of work rolls. The four two-high mills provided by the two twin-roll arranged stands including four pairs of work rolls are disposed close to each other so as to provide a tandem rolling in which a material to be rolled is rolled simultaneously by the two adjacent mills. A slab having a thickness of 200 to 240 mm is rolled by the two twin-roll arranged stands to obtain a bar of about 80 mm. A width press is provided near the entrance of the No. 1 stand. A descaling device is provided at the entrance of each of the two stands. The descaling device has a nozzle which is movable in the direction transverse to the direction of travel of the material to be rolled. A non-driven roll edger is provided at the exit of each of the two stands. Thus, generation of camber in the roughing rolling process can be reduced, and stable joining continuous rolling can be conducted. Furthermore, the overall length of the system can be reduced, and reduction in the bar temperature, which occurs until the bar reaches the joining position, can be lessened. Rational bar joining can be conducted.

Apparatus for sizing square metal ingots to be subsequently pierced in a push bench to form pierced blanks for rolling into tubes is provided having freely rotatable sizing rolls to engage the corner edges of the ingot as the ingot is pushed through the support and freely rotatable guiding rollers to engage the side faces of the ingot. The sizing rolls are radially adjustable by means of both a coarse adjustment device and a fine adjustment device while the guiding rollers are only provided with coarse adjustment. The adjustment devices can be computer controlled so that both ends of the ingot are conically tipped and so that the ingot is slightly tapered throughout its length.

A provisional elongation strain difference distribution Δε(x) of a metal strip during rolling is found under conditions in which out-of-plane deformation of the metal strip is restrained. A critical buckling strain difference distribution Δεcr(x) is found based on the provisional elongation strain difference distribution Δε(x), a strip thickness and strip width of the metal strip, and tension acting on the metal strip at exit from a rolling mill. In cases in which the provisional elongation strain difference distribution Δε(x) exceeds the critical buckling strain difference distribution Δεcr(x), the difference between the provisional elongation strain difference distribution Δε(x) and the critical buckling strain difference distribution Δεcr(x) is found, and this difference is added to the provisional elongation strain difference distribution Δε(x) to find a true elongation strain difference distribution Δε′(x). Rolling conditions are set based on the true elongation strain difference distribution Δε′(x), and the metal strip is rolled, thereby controlling the profile of the metal strip.

A method and apparatus for the solid-state forming of a metallic feedstock into thin sheet or foil is disclosed that uses improved isothermal roll forging techniques. The improvements include the use of rotatable backup rolls for increasing hollow work roll stiffness, two independent work roll heating controllers, a reduced work roll diameter and other means for precise control of conditions within a feedstock "travelling hot zone" (THZ). The disclosed improvements allow the application of isothermal roll forging techniques to the rolling of thin sheets from difficult-to-work, high-strength metals such as aluminides, intermetallics, superalloys, titanium alloys, ODS composites, beryllium, and others in sheets having widths of 24-inches and more.

A method of rolling a continuous welded billet having weld joints at successive locations along the billet and wherein the continuous welded billet is advanced through roll pairs of successive roll stands. The rolling conditions in two successive stands are adjusted so that when a weld joint is between the two stands compression is produced at the weld joint causing an increase of cross-sectional area at the weld joint. The rolling condition involves superimposing an increase in roll speed in the upstream roll stand compared to the downstream roll stand based on tracking information of the weld joint.
