A process for creating a curved rail for use by a trolley by providing a rail having a first side, a second side, a third side, a first edge located between said first side and said second side, and a second edge located between said second side and said third side. The process comprises pinching the first edge and second edge with sufficient force to provide a substantially constant curvature across a majority of said second side. The pinching is not only inexpensive, but also hardens the surface of the rail.

There is provided a rolled plate joining apparatus equipped with a truck that can travel reversibly in the rolling direction, tailing end pinch rolls that are mounted on the truck and can be moved vertically with the tailing end of a preceding rolled plate pinched horizontally, leading end pinch rolls that are mounted on the truck and can pinch horizontally the leading end of a succeeding rolled plate, machining apparatuses for cutting one surface of the tailing end of the preceding rolled plate and the other surface of the leading end of the succeeding rolled plate, and a pressure welding apparatus for compressing the preceding rolled plate and the succeeding rolled plate with the machined surfaces of the preceding rolled plate and the succeeding rolled plate overlapped to reduce them approximately to the thickness of the rolled plates, including a tailing end centering apparatus placed between the tailing end pinch rolls and the pressure welding apparatus for pressing the opposite width ends of the tailing end of the rolled plate to align the center line of the rolled plate with the center line of the joining apparatus in the rolling direction and a leading end centering apparatus placed between the pressure welding apparatus and the leading end pinch rolls for pressing the opposite width ends of the leading end of the rolled plate to align the center line of the rolled plate with the center line of the joining apparatus in the rolling direction.

A zone heating device has first and second spaced burners for heating first and second spaced sides of a metal plate during forming of a thickened edge along the edge of the metal plate. The first and second burners are elevationally movable by an actuator between first and second spaced transverse positions relative to the sides of the metal plate. An actuator moves the zone heating device along a trackway in directions transverse the plate edge. A fixed guide under the bias of the actuator engages the edge of the metal plate and maintains the first and second burners at a predetermined location relative to the plate edge. A movable guide maintains the first and second burners at another preselected location relative to the plate edge. A control device controls movement of the first and second burners, the zone heating device, and the movable guide in response to preprogrammed instructions. The zone heating device is particularly suited for use on a forming apparatus.

A method for rolling out a slab, preferably a slab produced by continuous casting, to form a billet having a square cross section, in which the width of the slab is reduced by repeated powerful edging passes, a temperature drop starting from the central region of the slab being provided during rolling, for example by spraying the edge regions of the slab with coolant, in order to give the edge regions greater deformation resistance and thus to prevent bulges at the edge regions. The bulge occurring in the central region of the slab is rolled away by guide rollers located at right-angles to the edging rolls. A rolling mill with suitable heating means is also provided.

A rolled plate joining apparatus for joining rolled plates by cutting one surface of the tailing end of a preceding rolled plate and the other surface of the leading end of a succeeding rolled plate while traveling in the width direction and by overlapping the resulting cut surfaces to be joined. The joining apparatus includes machining apparatuses each having a cutter for cutting the undersurface of the tailing end and the upper surface of the leading end, a traversing apparatus for running said machining apparatuses in the plate width direction to move said machining apparatuses to waiting positions outside of the plate width, and cutter cooling apparatuses provided in said waiting positions for cooling said cutters. A method of hot rolling steel slabs of thin to standard thickness into hot mill band is carried out on a hot reversing mill having a coiler furnace upstream and downstream of the reversing mill. A twin stand hot reversing mill is used and the slab is introduced into the first stand of the mill without any breakdown pass. Flat passes of the slab back and forth through the first stand and the second stand occur to form an intermediate product having a thickness capable of being coiled. Thereafter, the intermediate product is coiled on one of the upstream or downstream drums. The product is then passed back and forth between the first and second stand in tandem. An edging stand is positioned between the reversing stands to edge the product during the flat passes. The final product is removed from the hot mill band in one of sheet, plate or coil form.

In conventional fabrication manufacture the thickness of the steel plates are often determined by the metal section required at the weld joints. The subject apparatus and method overcomes this problem by selectively forming a thickened edge along the edge of a thinner steel plate which can now be limited to the thickness required to withstand the stresses on the fabrication. The thickened edge is produced by passing a plate supported on a table through a forming apparatus having a forming roller. The table is movable in an oblique direction relative to the plate so that the shape of the thickened edge may be varied. The forming apparatus and table are automatically controlled to produce a thickened edge of a desired shape intermittently or continuously along a linear or non-linear edge of the plate.
