In some embodiments, the discharge electrode may be formed of a non-ohmic material that exhibits a saturation velocity above a voltage threshold. The non-ohmic material may have a semiconductor with doping impurities or ceramics. In other embodiments, the discharge electrode is formed of an ohmic material characterized by increased resistance through the discharge electrode.
Abstract:
A concentration of HC in an exhaust gas is estimated with a high degree of accuracy by making use of a particulate matter processing apparatus (1). In the particulate matter processing apparatus (1) in which a processing part (3) with an electrode (5) installed therein is arranged in an exhaust passage (2) of an internal combustion engine, wherein particulate matter is caused to aggregate by generating a potential difference between the electrode (5) and the processing part (3), provision is made for a power supply (6) that is connected to the electrode (5) and applies a voltage thereto, an insulation part (4) that insulates electricity between the processing part (3) and the exhaust passage (2), and a ground part (53) that grounds the processing part (3), a detection device (9) that detects an electric current in the ground part (53), and an estimation device (7) that estimates a concentration of HC in an exhaust gas based on the electric current detected by the detection device (9) at the time when the voltage is applied to the electrode (5) by means of the power supply (6).

Abstract:
A method for collecting fine particles from flue gases onto selected collector surfaces includes leading the flue gases from a combustion chamber to a selected chamber that is part of a flow channel of the flue gasses. The selected channel is delimited by walls presenting the selected collector surfaces. Gas ions are formed with aid of a corona discharge of an ion source inside the selected chamber. The ion source includes a separate body relative to the selected chamber that is electrically passive and contains a corona electrode maintained at a high-voltage relative to the collector surfaces. The selected collector surfaces form a counter potential to the high voltage of the corona electrode. The gas ions are led to the selected chamber and mixed with the flue gases to charge the fine particles in the flue gas which are collected on the selected collector surfaces.
Abstract:
An emissions reduction stack includes a conditioning section, collector section utilizing a Wet Electrostatic Precipitator (WESP), and output section. A chemically active aqueous stream is introduced into an incoming process stream in order to saturate the stream and produce a fog stream wherein water is condensed on the surface of particulates. The process of condensation increases the efficiency of the particulate filtration process conducted by the WESP.
Abstract:
A collecting electrode for use in wet electrostatic precipitators, the collecting electrode being fabricated from an electrically-conductive, corrosion resistant and temperature and spark resistant composite material comprising carbon fiber and thermosetting resin so as to pro\ the collecting electrode with an improved arc resistance, as dictated by erosion density and direction, by controlling the weave pattern and/or fabric thickness of the carbon fibers.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus are provided for reducing waste effluent from a system including a boiler and a wet electrostatic precipitator, the waste effluent having blow down water discharged by the boiler during a blow down operation and bleed water discharged by the wet electrostatic precipitator. The method includes collecting the blow down water and providing it to the wet electrostatic precipitator as a makeup water supplement, evaporating a portion the bleed water and leaving residual bleed water, providing the evaporated bleed water to the wet electrostatic precipitator as a further makeup water supplement, and using the residual bleed water to quench ash produced by combustion of solid fuel by the boiler. The apparatus includes an evaporator that provides direct contact between hot boiler flue gas and the bleed water such that a portion of the flue gas is quenched before being provided to the wet electrostatic precipitator.

Abstract:
An excessively large electric current is suppressed from flowing to an electrode. Provision is made for an electrode arranged in an exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine, a power supply connected to the electrode for applying a voltage thereto, an air fuel ratio detection device for detecting or estimating an air fuel ratio of an exhaust gas which flows through the exhaust passage, and a power upper limit setting device for setting an upper limit for electric power supplied to the electrode from the power supply in cases where the air fuel ratio detected or estimate.
