Abstract: A davit (10) for arresting the fall of a person working at heights or for material handling where lifting of overloaded material is prevented, has a mast (12), a fuse holder (14) at the top of mast, a fuse head (16) connected to the fuse holder and having sacrificial fuses (18) arranged in series thereon, a jib arm (20) connected to the fuse head, and a primary fall arrestor system (22) having an arresting load limit and mounted to a side of the mast if the davit is to be used for arresting the fall of a person (25) working at heights, and/or a primary lifting-overload prevention system having a working load limit and safety factors if the davit is to be used for material handling where lifting of overloaded material (78) is to be prevented. When excessive forces are being absorbed either by the primary fall arrestor system or by the primary lifting-overload prevention system, the fuse head rotates downwardly relative to the fuse holder, and causes the breaking of one or progressively more of the sacrificial fuses until enough fuses have been broken to absorb the excessive forces.

Abstract: An energy-absorbing structure for a tether line includes a helical spring and a first connector for securing a first end of the helical spring to a first fastener (such as a support cable section, an eye bolt or an eye nut). The first connector has an externally threaded portion for threadedly receiving the first end of the helical spring. A sleeve is provided on the connector, extending over at least part of the first end of the helical spring and the external threaded portion of the connector, for retaining the helical spring on the connector. Additionally or alternatively, the connector includes a tapered portion extending from the inner end of the externally threaded portion.

Abstract: The rope grab uses friction to control movement along the rope. A brake has an eye at one end and a foot at the other that extends away at an angle to a rounded toe. Optionally, the eye and foot are attached so as to swivel. A cam has an oval rocker and a lever that extends from the rocker opposite the rocker surface. The rocker surface curves eccentrically about an axis, so the rocker behaves like a cam to modulate friction on the rope. The rope extends through a slot and is pinched between an operative surface of the rocker surface and the toe. The brake and cam are held in the correct position relative to each other between two parallel walls of a housing with the eye and lever extending in generally opposite directions outside the housing. Optional springs bias the brake toe and operative surface into the slot.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to an anchor for anchoring to an elevated worksite. The anchor includes a shock absorbing portion configured to progressively distort under sudden loading, the shock absorbing portion having one or more serpentine shaped members each defining one or more serpentine shaped curves visible from a front view of the shock absorbing portion, the shock absorbing portion having a curved profile defining one or more curves visible from a side view of the shock absorbing portion. The curved profile is configured to progressively distort under sudden loading so as to provide a first level of shock absorption, and the serpentine shaped curves are configured to progressively distort under sudden loading to provide a second level of shock absorption.

Abstract: A fall protection harness includes a computer processor, an optical transmitter, and an optical receiver coupled. The optical transmitter and the optical receiver are optically coupled. Upon damage to the fall protection harness, the optical coupling between the optical transmitter and the optical receiver is broken, the computer processor senses the break in the optical coupling between the optical transmitter and the optical receiver; and the computer processor generates a signal indicating the damage.
