摘要: Disclosed is an endoprosthesis device and method of installing the same immovably in a medullary canal under a constant predetermined uniformly distributed pressure. The rigid prosthesis stem is typically embraced by an elastomeric element designed for continuous pressurization into compressed resilient anchorage with the medullary canal surface. The tubular elastomeric element can be pressurized in various ways such as by a captive gas, or by a fluent material until this material takes a set, or by a combination of pressurized gas and settable fluent material. When a captive pressurized gas is used, along or with a settable material, it provides a major portion of the elastic energy anchoring the prosthesis immovably in place; and when a settable pressurizing medium is used, the elastic energy is stored in the compressed thick elastomer. The constant elastic energy fosters bone growth to augment prosthesis anchorage. Permanent anchorage is achieved virtually instantly following alignment and pressurization of the prosthesis. When a settable material is used, the stem may include a withdrawable wedge to facilitate separation of the remainder of the prosthesis from the medullary canal. The expandable/compressible elastic component readily compensates for irregularity in the canal wall and requires a minimum of preliminary preparation of its surface.

摘要: An endoprosthesis is immovably anchored in a medullary canal under a constant predetermined uniformly distributed pressure. The rigid prosthesis stem is typically embraced by an elastomeric element designed for continuous pressurization into compressed resilient anchorage with the medullary canal surface. The tubular elastomeric element can be pressurized in various ways such as by a captive gas, or by a fluent material until this material takes a set, or by a combination of pressurized gas and settable fluent material. When a captive pressurized gas is used, alone or with a settable fluent material, it provides a major portion of the elastic energy anchoring the prosthesis immovably in place; and when a settable pressurizing medium is used, the elastic energy is stored in the compressed thick elastomer. The bladder can have spaced apart porous-surfaced plates bonded to the outer surface of the bladder for being expanded into contact with a cavity in the cancellous bone portion of the femur to enhance bony ingrowth during use.

摘要: A bone prosthesis is provided which includes an implantable elongate stem member having a bore extending therethrough. The stem member has a proximal end and a distal end with at least one slot formed in the distal end. The slot extends along at least a portion of the stem member, in a longitudinal direction, from the distal end towards the proximal end to form at least two tines at the distal end of the stem. A bolt member is disposed within the bore of the stem member and has a proximal end and a distal end, wherein at least a portion of the bolt member proximate the distal end is threaded. An expander nut is disposed between the tines and is threadably matable with the distal end of the bolt member such that rotation of the bolt member in a first direction is effective to draw the expander nut towards the proximal end of the stem member to separate the tines at the distal end of the stem member.

摘要: A kit for producing a modular prosthesis is provided, the kit including a first prosthesis member having a cavity such as a bore formed in it, and a clamp releasably clamped in the cavity. The clamp, which may be a rod having an axial bore through a portion of its length, is subjected to an external stimulus such as a stretching force to cause the diameter of the clamp to be reduced enough so that the clamp is received in the cavity. As the stimulus is withdrawn, the clamp returns toward its initial configuration, and in so doing, expands against the walls of the cavity. A second prosthesis member may be configured to receive a portion of the first member such that expansion of the clamp in the cavity of the first member concurrently causes that member to expand into contact with the second member to clamp the members together.

摘要: A femoral component of a replacement hip joint is provided which has a stem for fixing in cement in a medullary cavity by cement and having a separate proximal component provided with a neck for a ball head. An attachment system is provided for securing the proximal component to the stem which allows selection of an infinite number of angularly displaced positions about a proximal/distal axis, and adapted to allow fixation of the two parts after insertion of the stem into the prepared medullary cavity and without causing torsional loads on the stem. The stem extends proximally to the level of the bone cut which allows the proximal component to rotate after the stem is implanted. If an infinite number of angularly displaced positions is not required, then a Vernier coupling system with a large member of positions can be used.

摘要: An orthopaedic prosthesis system for replacement of an articulating portion of a long bone includes a sleeve, a stem, and a neck. The sleeve has an outer bone engagement surface and includes opposed proximal and distal female taper regions. The stem has a distal end for fixation within a long bone and a proximal end including a male taper region engaged with the distal female taper of the sleeve. The neck has a taper post that engages the proximal taper of the sleeve. Both the neck and the sleeve may define axial bores, the axial bore in the sleeve communicating with and being generally coaxial with the two opposed female tapers, and the neck axial bore extending through the taper post. A connecting element can engage the stem, pass through the axial bore in the sleeve, extend into the axial bore in the neck taper post, and engage the neck.

摘要: A bone prosthesis is provided which includes an implantable elongate stem member having a bore extending therethrough. The stem member has a proximal end and a distal end with at least one slot formed in the distal end.
