Abstract:
Paper-based elongate structures suitable for use as lumber substitutes, articles of manufacture made thereof, kits of materials including such structures, and machines and methods for making the same. Elongate structures according to the invention include a hollow outer portion formed of corrugated fiberboard sheet material and an accordion-folded inner support formed of corrugated fiberboard sheet material. The hollow outer portion has four outer surfaces that define a rectangle when viewed in cross-section transverse to a longitudinal axis of the elongate structure. The accordion-folded inner support is enclosed within the hollow outer portion. The inner support includes a plurality of first spaced-apart peaks that contact a first inner surface of the hollow outer portion and a plurality of second spaced-apart peaks that contact an opposing second inner surface of the hollow outer portion. The accordion-folded inner support structure improves the beam strength, crush resistance and lateral strength of the elongate structure.
Abstract:
Among other things, a piece of furniture is formed from three separate precut pieces of flat cardboard. A first one of the pieces has a bottom edge to rest on a floor with the first piece rising vertically from the bottom edge and has at least one slot at an upper edge of the first piece. A second one of the pieces has a bottom edge to rest on the floor with the second piece rising from the bottom edge and having at least one slot at an upper edge of the second piece. A third one of the pieces has a crease across the piece and at least two slots along at least one edge that is parallel to the fold. The piece of furniture is formed by mating the one slot in the first piece with one of the slots of the third piece, folding the third piece of cardboard at the crease, and mating the one slot in the second piece with another one of the slots of the third piece, with the third piece folded along the crease.
Abstract:
A mortise and tenon assembly comprising the insertion of tenons of multilayered corrugated Kraft into mortises in panels of corrugated Kraft. The tenons have a folding flap and tuck slot that form an interlocking connection. The assembly is practical and easy for the user to construct without needing to use tools. It enables and facilitates the transport of the structures prior to assembly in parts arranged in a compact manner, occupying a relatively small space.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein are folded sheets of material for use as a structural member and assembly thereof. According to an aspect, a sheet of material defines one or more tabs, slots, and a plurality of fold lines. The fold lines are spaced such that folding the sheet along the fold lines places the slots in substantial alignment for receiving the at least one tab such that a structural member having a web formed in an interior thereof is formed.
Abstract:
An article of flexible furniture having a core formed from a plurality of laminar panels of material and each panel having a pair of oppositely directed major faces, said panels being inter-connected to provide a cellular structure upon movement of abutting faces away from each other, a pair of supports at opposite ends of said core and connected to respective ones of said faces, said supports being self-supporting to provide rigidity to said core whereby said supports may be moved apart to expand said cellular and extend the length of said partition.
Abstract:
A honeycomb-shaped panel is formed from a plurality of generally sinusoidally shaped strips of molded fiberboard material each having spaced, oppositely directed flat peaks, the peaks of adjacent strips being secured together to form a plurality of hexagonally shaped cells extending perpendicular to the surfaces of the sheet. The strips may be cut from a single sheet of corrugated fiberboard sheet material and then secured together to form the honeycomb panel, or a plurality of such panels may be secured together face to face with their ribs aligned to form a stack, and selected cuts may be made through the secured, stacked panels to form a plurality of honeycomb panels of desired surface shape and height dimensions.
Abstract:
The device of the present invention includes one or more blanks in the form of flattened tubes, erected into tubular components and assembled together to simulate the shape of furniture pieces and which may be draped with a fitted cover to mock the desired furniture piece.

The strips forming the cells are substantially rigid and resistant to collapse of the cells, and form a substantially rigid core when assembled between two flexible fiberboard skins, while the panel is bendable to adopt a desired panel curvature.
Abstract:
A kit for use in producing a three-dimensional article from flat cardboard sheets, includes: a cardboard assembly of flat cardboard sheets, each cut according to a predetermined configuration and formed with a predetermined arrangement of fold lines such as to permit the cardboard assembly to be folded from a flat condition for shipping and handling, to a three-dimensional condition defining a three-dimensional article having dimensional stability, structural rigidity and a pleasing appearance. Disclosed, for purposes of example, are kits for producing a stool, a chair, a desk and a table.
Abstract:
A foldable, recyclable chair for stadium event patrons. First and second longitudinal score lines divide a pre-scored, pre-cut blank into left and right longitudinally-extended, mirror-image sections joined by a central section. The central section comprises five quadrilateral panels joined in tandem at transverse score lines, the topmost comprising two triangular panels joined by a trapezoidal panel. The left and right sections each comprise, in descending order, an upper flap panel, a rectangular array of triangular panels defined by intersecting diagonal score lines that join opposite corners of the rectangular array; a first trapezoidal panel that is bounded by a diagonal score line; a second trapezoidal panel joined to the first along the diagonal score line boundary thereof; and a rectangular panel joined to a lower end portion of the central section and separated from the second trapezoidal panel by a transverse cut line. The blank folds to form a chair that opens for sitting and collapses for storage. In a second version, the central section comprises seven panels joined in tandem at transverse score lines. A left longitudinal section includes an upper, four-panel assembly and a lower, two-panel assembly. The right longitudinal section is a mirror-image twin of the left.
