Pressurized cylinders are rapidly filled with acetylene gas and solvent in a staged process that is closely monitored by a control unit to assure that filling progresses with all critical variables maintained within safe bounds. An operator performs certain preliminary cylinder hookup tasks as monitored and prompted by the control unit. The control unit conducts the actual filling of the cylinder, carrying out this procedure in distinct filling stages with alternate injections of solvent and gas into the cylinder. The improved system enhances the safety and efficiency with which acetylene cylinders are filled.

Methods and apparatus for forming glass articles such as bottles and the like utilize flows of pressurized cold cryogen vapor that are introduced into mold cavities which are being used to mold glass articles. The cold cryogen vapor hastens cooling and solidification of the articles so that the time during which the articles must be retained in their molds is significantly reduced. Reductions in mold retention times enable the apparatus to be operated at increased speeds, whereby its productivity is significantly increased. Productivity increases of 15 percent and often more can be achieved at relatively low expense. The use of cold cryogen vapor introduction into mold cavities is applicable to a variety of glass molding techniques including molding and blow molding. Cold cryogen vapor introduction can be used in staged molding procedures, for example in operations where a hollow blank or parison of glass is first press-formed in a roughing mold, and is then blow-molded in a finishing mold to assume its final form; in such a staged procedure, cold cryogen vapor introduction may be used in either or both of the roughing and finishing stages to expedite solidification and to permit increased productivity. In preferred practice the cold cryogen vapor is nitrogen gas that is released from a container of liquid nitrogen. Cold cryogen vapor may be mixed with flows of cooling and/or blowing gases for delivery with these gases into mold cavities. In preferred practice, cold cryogen vapor is delivered into the mold cavities without being mixed with other flows of cooling and/or blowing gases.

In a glass melting furnace of the type that has a basin wherein a bath of molten glass is heated by a blanket of flame that extends over the molten bath, performance and productivity are enhanced by installing oxygen injection lances through holes that are drilled through walls of the furnace at tuck stone levels just above the top surface of the molten bath of glass in the furnace basin. The lances are thin walled tubes that each carry an adjustable flange for preventing unwanted convection and radiation through furnace wall holes that receive the lances. By bending the thin walled tubes to carefully direct the discharging flows of oxygen so that the discharge paths properly extend across the top surface of the molten bath in closely spaced, parallel relationship thereto, and by selecting discharge opening sizes, the injected flows of oxygen are aimed and defined so as to effectively draw the blanket of flame down to surface portions of the molten material that is being heated, and to achieve complete combustion and maximum flame coverage. Thus both flame positioning and combustion efficiency are improved concurrently.

A system for forming hollow pressed glass articles utilizes a flow of cryogen that is mixed with air to provide a cooling gas that enables newly pressed articles to be removed from their molds after a thin skin of solidified glass has been formed on internal surfaces of the articles to strengthen the newly formed articles and to give them shape stability. Two flows of cryogen are used, one being a gentle, substantially continuous flow of cryogen gas from a low pressure source, the other being a controlled intermittent flow of cryogen vapor in liquid and/or gaseous form from a high pressure source. To assure a proper introduction of cryogen vapor, and to prevent debilitating accumulations of ice within and about the tube that is used to inject high pressure cryogen, the high pressure injector tube is surrounded by a low pressure cryogen flow tube, through which a flow of low pressure cryogen gas is maintained on a substantially continuous basis. By this arrangement, when the high pressure flow of cryogen is shut off between bursts of flow into mold cavities that are brought sequentially into a cooling gas injection station, the discharge end of the high pressure injector tube is kept purged of moisture laden ambient air. Because the system of the present invention hastens cooling and solidification of newly formed glass articles, the time during which the articles must be retained in their molds is significantly reduced.

A group of pressurized gas cylinders are integrated into a unit to prevent relative motion between them, especially during transport, by a system of banding which can be quickly applied when needed and quickly cut away when separation of the cylinders is required. In preferred practice, six cylinders are integrated by arranging the cylinders in an array of paired rows. A central pair of the cylinders is banded tightly together, whereafter end pairs of the cylinders are integrated into the whole by a tight peripheral band surrounding the entire array. In preferred practice, the array of cylinders is integrated within the confines of a pallet which has upstanding posts positioned at the ends of the cylinder array. The posts are located so as to deflect portions of the peripheral band inwardly to increase its degree of wrap around the end pairs of cylinders. Two spacer bars covered by frictional sleeves are supported by the posts and extend between the paired cylinders so that the bands, when applied, force the cylinders against the spacer bars to enhance the integrating effect.

Lower portions of the outer wall of a pressurized gas cylinder are cooled during filling of the cylinder with a pressurized gas such as acetylene. A basket-like frame is installed atop the cylinder to support an annular manifold such that the manifold encircles the cylinder at a location spaced downwardly from the top of the cylinder. The manifold defines a plurality of fluid discharge openings which direct multiple flows of coolant toward the outer walls of the cylinder, whereby lower portions of the outer wall of the cylinder are bathed with a flowing curtain of coolant. The frame includes a C-shaped member which rests on the upper shoulders of the cylinder, and struts which depend from the C-shaped member to support the manifold.

A method and apparatus are provided for rapidly and efficiently cooling a flow of a food substance such as ground chicken meat while simultaneously conveying the food substance along a relatively short, upwardly inclined travel path that is defined by an inner chamber of an elongate housing assembly. A power driven auger extends along the travel path and is journaled by the housing assembly for rotation within the inner chamber. An inlet hopper is provided for introducing a flow of relatively warm food substance into a lower end region of the inner chamber. A discharge spout is provided for discharging a cooled flow of the food substance from an upper end region of the inner chamber. Cooling of the food substance as it is conveyed along the travel path is effected by providing the housing assembly with a refrigerant chamber that surrounds but is segregated from the inner chamber. Liquid cryogen is introduced into the refrigerant chamber and evaporates to form a gas as it serves to indirectly cool the food substance flow that is being fed through the inner chamber. The temperature of the discharging food substance is maintained within desired limits by monitoring the temperature of the evaporated cryogen that is permitted to discharge from the refrigerant chamber, and by utilizing the monitored gas discharge temperature as a key factor in controlling the supply of liquid cryogen to the refrigerant chamber.
