摘要: The present invention is directed to a method for producing a high gloss coating on a printed surface. In the present method, an aqueous coating composition is deposited onto a surface to be printed using a blanket roller coating face which is a low energy, non-stick, smooth surface profile. In the present method, simultaneous with the deposition of aqueous coating onto a substrate, or shortly thereafter, pressure either alone or in combination with heat may be applied to the coating in order to create a substantially tack-free surface conforming to the surface of the coating face. By using a highly polished coating face, high gloss coatings may be readily obtained using this methodology in a number of traditional printing techniques including wet trap inline sheet-fed printing, heat-set offset printing, dry trap inline flexographic printing, offset web-fed printing and gravure printing. Coatings which are produced utilizing the present invention have high gloss values heretofore unobtainable using aqueous coating compositions.

摘要: A method used in offset printing utilizes an electrically encoded image, stored in an electronic memory, to be transferred to a printing substrate during a coating application in an offset printing process. An offset printing blanket is attached under tension to a blanket cylinder of an offset printing machine. After attachment of the blanket to the cylinder, the blanket is automatically cut in accordance with the electrically encoded image. Subsequently, sections of the blanket are removed along cut lines made in the outer layer during the cutting thereof.

摘要: An assembly for the deposition of aqueous coating compositions in printing processes including wet-trap in-line, off-line dry-trap, gravure, offset (using water and waterless), silk-screen, flexography and related printing processes. Use of the present invention results in the adaption of an aqueous coating to virtually any coating method without the need to change the chemical content of that formulation and in certain embodiments, produces unexpectedly high levels of solid being incorporated into printing coating compositions for obtaining levels of gloss on surfaces which have been heretofore unobtainable. In addition, the present invention is readily adaptable to virtually every type of coating process used to coat inked, uninked and related surfaces. The present invention also may be adapted for use of improved coatings without affecting the mechanical transfer to instill superior film characteristics, including high gloss value, increased film integrity and enhanced mar resistance without having to resort to the use of VOC's in coating formulations. Thus, in one aspect of the invention, by utilizing the present invention, an aqueous coating composition containing low VOC's or even an absence of VOC's can be generally adapted to a number of printing methods to provide exceptionally favorable transfer, especially including high gloss value.

摘要: A coater for an offset printing press in which the last printing station, i.e., the blanket cylinder roller with its associated sheet-handling grippers, is converted to coating service, such that a pick-up roller, after an ascending arcuate path not exceeding 80.degree., transfers a liquid coating to an applicator roller rotating in an opposing direction to the blanket cylinder surface which coats the individual imprinted sheets and the liquid coating itself serves as a lubricant permitting said opposing directions of rotation and grippers of said blanket cylinder roller maintain proper handling control of the sheets during the coating thereof. Limiting the arcuate path of 80.degree. obviates reverse flow of the liquid coating on the pick-up roller.
