A selected portion of a surface of a metallic workpiece such as the end surface of a tubular workpiece, is provided with one or more recesses by resorting to a tool having a preferably pointed tip and being driven into the surface to displace the material of the workpiece substantially transversely of the thus obtained recess. The latter can be used to facilitate the establishment of a separable connection between the workpiece and a substantially disc-shaped section of a cover or housing in a friction clutch for use in motor vehicles. The tool can be left in the recess to serve as a locating or centering device for the workpiece.

Apparatus for damping torsional vibrations in the power train of a motor vehicle has two coaxial flywheels one of which is driven by the engine and the other of which can transmit torque to the input shaft of a transmission by way of a friction clutch. The flywheels are rotatable relative to each other against the resistance of a damper. Certain features of the apparatus reside in the dimensioning and distribution of its parts in the radial and axial directions of the flywheels to reduce the dimensions of the apparatus. The torque transmitting connection between at least one pair of neighboring rotary parts of the apparatus employs a slip clutch which yields when the applied torque exceeds a certain value. An intermittently or continuously active hysteresis device is utilized to operate in parallel with the energy storing springs of the damper.

A torsional vibration damper for use in a motor vehicle power train has an input disc part connected to the vehicle engine and an output disc part to the downstream side of the power train. The disc parts are rotatable relative to each other against the action of an energy accumulator such as a coiled compression spring. The energy accumulator is seated in a suspension device that is divided into two socket parts. The socket parts are rotatable in relation to each other as well as in relation to the input and output disc parts. The input and output disc parts have biasing means engaging the socket parts so that, for a first sense of relative rotation between the input and output disc parts, the biasing means of the input disc part engage the first socket part and the biasing means of the output disc part engage the second socket part while, for a second, opposite sense of relative rotation, the biasing means of the input disc part engage the second socket part and the biasing means of the output disc part engage the first socket part, with the result that for either sense of relative rotation between the input and output disc parts, the energy accumulator is always force-biased in a compressive sense between the socket parts.

A torque transmitting apparatus which can be used in the power train between the prime mover and the transmission of a motor vehicle has a first flywheel connectable to the prime mover, a second flywheel coaxial with and receiving torque from the first flywheel by way of a damper, and a friction clutch which can be engaged to transmit torque between the second flywheel and the input element of the transmission. The energy storing elements of the damper and the bearing between the two flywheels are installed radially inwardly of the friction surfaces of the second flywheel and the axially movable pressure plate of the friction clutch. This renders it possible to reduce at least the radial dimensions of the apparatus without reducing the diameters of the friction surfaces.

Apparatus for transmission of torque in the power train of a motor vehicle has coaxial rotary first and second torque transmitting devices, each of which can constitute a simple or a composite flywheel, and a torsional vibration damper operating between the two devices. The damper is installed in an annular chamber which is sealed at its periphery and is flanked by two sidewalls of the first torque transmitting device. The damper includes a washer-like partition which is affixed to the second torque transmitting device and has arms extending radially outwardly into the chamber. The radially inner part of the annular chamber is sealed by annular seals having annular carriers borne by the sidewalls at opposite sides of the partition, and deformable annular lips secured to the carriers and bearing upon the respective sides of the partition. The carriers and the lips consist of different materials and the seals serve to prevent penetration of impurities into and/or the escape of lubricant from the chamber. Such lubricant is in contact with coil springs which form part of the damper and oppose rotation of the torque transmitting devices relative to each other.

One flywheel is mounted on the output element of the engine and another flywheel is connectable to the power train by a friction clutch. Vibration dampers are installed between the flywheels, and such dampers are confined in a housing which is provided on the one flywheel and contains a supply of viscous fluid lubricating medium for the parts of the dampers. The housing is the input member of the dampers, and the output member of the dampers is a flange which extends into the housing and is axially movably coupled to the other flywheel.
