An alcohol such as methanol is reacted with carbon monoxide in a liquid reaction medium including a catalyst, an alkyl iodide such as methyl iodide, alkyl acetate such as methyl acetate in specified proportions, an additive, and an effective amount of water, where the additive increases an ionic character of the hydrogen iodide bond and the effective amount of water is sufficient to facilitate carboxylic acid release after carbonylation at the catalyst and to reduce anhydride formation. The present reaction system not only provides an acid product at water levels considerable below levels currently used, but also provides unexpected reaction rates and unexpected high catalyst stability.

The present carbonylation system not only increases the yields and reaction rates but also serves to stabilize the rhodium catalyst component in an active form.

Crystalline metal silicate compositions are prepared from a silica containing mixture which is substantially free of aluminum ions and which contains a chelating agent by digesting a reaction mixture comprising, a tetraalkylammonium compound, sodium hydroxide, a metal compound, an oxide of silicon, a chelating agent and water, with the reaction mixture containing less than about 100 ppm aluminum. Crystalline borosilicate compositions are of special interest. A method for activating the new crystalline compositions to enhance their usefulness for certain conversion processes is also disclosed.

C., a Type V adsorption/desorption isotherm and a bimodal pore size distribution. This clay has particular application in the catalytic hydrogenation of an unsaturated edible oil wherein an edible oil is contacted with catalytically effective amount of the clay.

Crystalline ferroborosilicate compositions are prepared from a silica containing mixture by digesting a reaction mixture comprising a tetraalkylammonium compound, a sodium hydroxide, a boron compound, an oxide of silicon, an iron ion source, an optional chelating agent and water to provide the crystalline ferroborosilicate which is then palladium ion-exchanged. This composition may be used alone or physically mixed with a methanol catalyst. Conversion of synthesis gas, dimethylether, ethylene and methanol to low molecular hydrocarbons employing these new ferroborosilicates as catalysts is also disclosed.
