    摘要: An optical amplifier for amplifying a plurality of signal components of a multi-wavelength optical beam passing through an optical fiber includes a portion of the optical fiber doped with a rare earth ion to amplify the optical signal wherein the gain spectrum as a function of the wavelength is nonuniform. The optical amplifier further includes a gain flattening module to compensate for the nonuniform gain spectrum of the doped fiber by attenuating each of the channels of the amplified signal to equalize the gain. A gain equalization module compensates for varying gain fluctuations due to the adding and subtracting of signal components. The gain equalization module adjusts dynamically each signal component of the optical beam such that the amplitudes of the signal components are substantially equal, in response to a plurality of control signals. Each control signal is representative of the degree of attenuation required to equalize the signal components. The respective control signals are generated by a loop status monitor that includes a waveguide for demultiplexing the optical beam, and a detector array that determines the amplitude of each signal component. A controller generates the control signals in dependence of the amplitude of the signal components.

    摘要: A rare earth doped fiber for use in a fiber laser is presented. The fiber laser uses a single stripe broad area pump diode permits Yb lasing in its 3-level transition at 980 nm preferentially over the 1010 nm 4-level transition. The present fiber laser is characterized by a dual cladding fiber geometry which includes an inner rare earth doped single mode core. There is an inner cladding designed to be a multimode pump core for the pump light. The pump core is followed by a final cladding to confine the pump radiation. The present laser matches the larger/outer mode field to that of a single stripe broad area diode in order to maximize the pump intensity.

    摘要: An endoluminal biopsy device is provided with a proximal actuation mechanism attached to a distal sampler by at least one elongate member. The distal sampler includes a distal inner portion defining a plurality of chambers, each configured to receive a tissue sample, and a distal outer portion defining a cutting mechanism opening having a cutting edge adjacent the cutting mechanism opening. The distal outer portion is configured so that, when the cutting mechanism opening aligns with one of the plurality of chambers, the distal outer portion covers the remaining chambers. A related method for the use of such an endoluminal biopsy device also is provided.

    摘要: A large diameter D-shaped optical waveguide device 9, includes an optional circular waveguide portion 11 and a D-shaped waveguide portion 10 having at least one core 12 surrounded by a cladding 14. A portion of the waveguide device 9 has a generally D-shaped cross-section and has transverse waveguide dimension d2 greater than about 0.3 mm. At least one Bragg grating 16 may be impressed in the waveguide 10 and/or more than one grating or pair of gratings may be used and more than one core may be used. The device 9 provides a sturdy waveguide platform for coupling light into and out of waveguides and for attachment and alignment to other waveguides, for single and multi-core applications. The core and/or cladding 12,14 may be doped with a rare-earth dopant and/or may be photosensitive. At least a portion of the core 12 may be doped between a pair of gratings 50,52 to form a fiber laser or the grating 16 or may be constructed as a tunable DFB fiber laser or an interactive fiber laser within the waveguide 10. The waveguide may resemble a short “block” or a longer “cane” type, depending on the application and dimensions used.
