Disclosed are latent two-part polyurethane adhesives that rapidly develop adhesive strength when cured by application of infrared radiation containing a polyol component which includes; one or more polyols having a hydroxyl equivalent weight of 400 to 2000 and a nominal hydroxyl functionality of 2 to 3; one or more aliphatic diol chain extenders; one or more latent room temperature organometallic catalysts; and one or more multifunctional polyols having a functionality of greater than 3; b) a polyisocyanate component containing one or more polyisocyanate compounds; and v) a carboxylic acid-blocked cyclic amidine compound, vi) a phenol-blocked cyclic amidine compound or both of v) one or more carboxylic acid-blocked cyclic amidine compounds and vi) one or more phenol-blocked cyclic amidine compounds which may be located in the polyol component or the isocyanate component. Further disclosed are methods of bonding structures together using the latent two-part polyurethane adhesives.

The present invention is directed to a unique composition and method for promoting adhesion of substrates to adhesives. The solution comprises a water based primer composition comprising: a) a hydrosylate of one or more alkoxysilyl amine; b) a surfactant; c) an organotitanate, organozirconate, or combinations thereof; d) optionally a fluorescing compound; and e) water. Preferably the organotitanate or organozirconate correspond to formula (I): wherein M is titanium or zirconium and R8 comprises hydrocarbyl ligands, which may optionally contain one or more heteroatoms comprising oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur or phosphorus, optionally two or more of R8 may combine to form a cyclic ring structure. Preferably the composition and method of the invention can be used to bond glass or plastic coated with an abrasion resistant coating, in particular a window for a vehicle, to other substrates such as metal or plastics. Two-component polyurethane adhesives include a polyol component and a polyisocyanate component. The polyol component includes a polyether polyol and an aliphatic diol chain extender, but is devoid of primary and second amine compounds. The polyisocyanate component includes one or more polyisocyanate compounds. The adhesive contains a mixture of a dialkyltin-thioglycolate catalyst and an acid-blocked cyclic amidine catalyst. The tin catalyst is formulated into the polyol component, whereas the cyclic amidine catalyst can be formulated into either the polyol or the polyisocyanate components.

The adhesive compositions of the invention are especially useful in bonding replacement windows into structures without using a primer and allowing for fast drive away times. The adhesive is pumpable, sag resistant and bonds parts together at temperatures between about −10 C and about 80 C. The adhesive is comprised a linear and branched isocyanate functional polyether prepolymer wherein the linear and branched isocyanate functional polyether prepolymers are present in the composition at a particular weight ratios an isocyanate functional polyester prepolymer, a plasticizer and filler.
