Abstract: In one embodiment, a method includes detecting a slave device at a master device, determining at the master device if the slave device is configured for I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit) or SPE (Single Pair Ethernet) based on an output at the slave device, and selecting an I2C mode of operation at the master device if the slave device is configured for I2C, or selecting an SPE mode of operation at the master device if the slave device is configured for SPE. Data and control are selected from an I2C controller at the master device in the I2C mode of operation and selected from a physical coding sublayer at the master device in the SPE mode of operation.

Abstract: In one embodiment, an apparatus includes four independent single pair Ethernet ports coupled to a cable comprising four wire pairs for communication with a micro-switch, the micro-switch configured for communication with four endpoint devices, each of the endpoint devices in communication with the micro-switch over a single pair Ethernet cable comprising one of the four wire pairs. Each of the four independent single pair Ethernet ports comprises an echo canceller for receiving input from a transmitter at one of the independent single pair Ethernet ports and each of the other independent single pair Ethernet ports to cancel alien crosstalk between the four wire pairs.

Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed which can perform cable characterization at link-up and during in-service monitoring to provide the best data throughput. In some embodiments a plurality of frequency tones may be sent across a cable to a remote system. A plurality of return loss values associated with sending the plurality of frequency tones may then be measured and stored. Next, a crosstalk value across the cable may be computed. A quality value for the cable may then be determined based on at least the plurality of return loss values and the crosstalk value.
