Abstract:
A film construction includes a broad band reflective polarizing film that may be immersed in an ultra low refractive index medium. The reflecting polarizing film is characterized by a pass axis and a block axis, and its reflectivity for white light of the pass state polarization increases with increasing incidence angle to provide a compressed or narrowed viewing cone selectively in one plane of incidence. In some embodiments, the plane of incidence associated with the compressed viewing cone is aligned with the pass axis. In other embodiments it is aligned with the block axis.

In an example, an example article may include a spatially variant microreplicated layer optically coupled to a wavelength selective filter. The wavelength selective filter may have a light incidence angle-dependent optical band. The spatially variant microreplicated layer may be configured to transmit light to a first optical region of the wavelength selective filter at a first predetermined incidence angle and to a second optical region of the wavelength selective filter at a second predetermined incidence angle.
Abstract:
A technique of determining the presence of a species in a sample may include passing light through an optical filter. In an example, the optical filter may include a spatially variant microreplicated layer optically coupled to a wavelength selective filter.
Abstract:
The disclosure describes an example vehicle assistance system including a light sensor, a pixelated filter array adjacent the light sensor, and a full-field optically-selective element adjacent the pixelated filter array. The optically-selective element is configured to selectively direct an optical component of light incident on the optically-selective element across the pixelated filter array to the light sensor.
Abstract:
Optical stacks including a first reflective polarizer and a partially reflective component are described. The partially reflective component may be a second reflective polarizer or a collimating reflector. The first reflective polarizer has a first average visible light reflectance for light polarized along the first block axis at normal incidence of at least 90 percent and a first average visible light transmittance for light polarized along the first pass axis at normal incidence of at least 85 percent. The second reflective polarizer has a second block axis and a second average visible light reflectance for light polarized along the second block axis at normal incidence being no more than the first average visible light reflectance minus 10 percent. The first and second block axes are not parallel and the first and second reflective polarizers have different f-ratios.
Abstract:
A recycling cavity such as used in a backlight or similar extended area source includes a front and back reflector, the front reflector being partially transmissive to provide an output illumination area. The recycling cavity also includes a component that provides the cavity with a balance of specular and diffuse characteristics so as to balance cavity efficiency and brightness uniformity over the output area. The component can be characterized by a transport ratio of greater than 15% for a 15 degree incidence angle, and less than 95% for a 45 degree incidence angle.
