Each magnetic pole includes a pair of permanent magnets disposed apart from each other in the circumferential direction, and a magnetic flux-restraining hole that is formed and extended radially inwardly between radially inner end portions of the permanent magnets and that restrains flow of magnetic flux. The magnetic flux-restraining hole is extended so as to project beyond a position of the radially inner end portions to a radially outer side, between the pair of permanent magnets.

The rotor is provided with a plurality of support portions that extend radially about the center of rotation, and gap portions are respectively formed in correspondence with the plurality of support portions at positions spaced by a predetermined distance from an edge portion of the permanent magnets in a flowing direction of magnetic flux between the permanent magnets and the stator. The gap portions are formed to have such a length that causes magnetic saturation during generation of low torque in a low-current state and that causes no magnetic saturation during generation of maximum torque in a high-current state in which electricity at a high current is supplied to the stator coil.

An improved electrical insulation structure is provided for a motor driven fluid apparatus having the compression and drive mechanisms within a hermetically sealed housing. The drive mechanism comprises a drive shaft operatively connected to the compression mechanism and a motor for rotating the drive shaft. The motor comprises a rotor fixedly surrounding the drive shaft and a stator assembly surrounding the rotor with a small radial air gap therebetween. The stator assembly comprises an annular magnetic core fixedly secured to the housing. The core has a plurality of axially extending slots and a plurality of windings, each having a plurality of coils formed by multiple turns of an enamel-coated conductor. The multiple turns of the conductor have side turn portions which are disposed within the axially extending slots and end turn portions which axially project from the slots and are generally disposed about the axial end surfaces of the core. The connection points between the windings themselves, and between the windings and conductor leads, are fixedly covered with a film of insulating material, such as epoxy resin. Alternatively, a portion of the surface of the housing is fixedly covered with a film of insulating material, such as aluminum oxide formed by anodization.

A drive system comprises first and second motors for driving an electric car in response to alternating electric currents supplied to their coils. The first and second motors have their respective first and second rotors assembled on a common shaft at angular positions which are shifted by a first predetermined angle in their direction of rotation. Moreover, the first and second motors are energized by currents which are shifted in phase by a second predetermined angle. The first and second predetermined angles are individually determined in advance on the basis of the undesirable torque-fluctuation harmonic and the polar ratio of the motor. As a result, the torque fluctuations of the selected harmonic of the motor frequency of the first and second motors can offset each other to reduce the vibrations due to resonances.
