Abstract:
A method and apparatus for preparing a tire surface for installation of a transponder apparatus of the type comprising a transponder housing and an antenna, includes the steps: identifying a tire target surface having a footprint configured to receive the transponder apparatus thereagainst; positioning the tire target surface in an accessible relationship to cleaning apparatus; and actuating the cleaning apparatus to substantially eliminate undesired surface agents from the tire target surface. Relative movement between the cleaning apparatus and the tire target surface may be initiated to create the desired target surface shape, such as an annular configuration, and to facilitate a substantial purging of undesired surface agents from substantially all of the target surface.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a retreadable tire which contains a non-black colored rubber carcass cushion layer sandwiched between its tire tread and tire casing. The non-black colored rubber carcass cushion layer acts both as an adhesive and transition layer for adhering a cured or uncured tire tread to the cured tire carcass. Such carcass cushion layer also acts as a detectable color indictor for indexing and monitoring a complete removal (e.g. by buffing, abrading, or cutting) of the circumferential rubber tire tread and partial removal of the carcass cushion layer without removing the entire carcass cushion layer. The invention also relates to a method of retreading a cured rubber tire carcass by completely removing a circumferential, carbon black reinforced (and therefor a black colored) tire rubber tread together with a partial removal of the contrastingly colored cured rubber carcass cushion layer to a depth indexed and/or determined by an automated rubber cushion layer color sensing means, or apparatus, followed by applying a non-black colored uncured circumferential rubber carcass cushion layer and carbon black reinforced (therefore black colored) tire tread thereon to form an assembly thereof and vulcanizing the assembly in a suitable mold to form a retread tire.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a tire having a portion thereof such as a sidewall component that glows-in-the-dark due to the presence of a phosphorescent layer thereon. The present invention also relates to a tire having, and to a process for incorporating, a phosphorescent decal on the sidewall component. Very small amounts of phosphorescent material are used, resulting in a low cost safety tire.
Abstract:
A balance material is applied to the inner surface of a tire at one or more selected locations to offset an imbalance of the tire. The balance material is fluently applied to the inner surface at a first viscosity, whereafter the balance material transforms to exhibit a second viscosity that is higher than the first viscosity and remains affixed to the inner surface of the tire at the point of application. A method of balancing a tire comprises determining the location and amount of balance material needed to correct an imbalance of the tire, applying the balance material at a first viscosity, and transforming the balance material to have a second viscosity sufficient to maintain the balance material at the desired location.
Abstract:
An applique having a vulcanizable adhesive layer is co-cured on a rubber article by precuring the applique of predominantly pale natural rubber optionally imprinted with a bar code; coating the upper surface of the applique with a protective self-supporting film of polyamide less than 0.050 mm (2 mils) thick, or a non-self-supporting film of polyurethane less than 25.4 μm, 0.0254 mm (1 mil) thick; adhering the applique to the article at a chosen location; curing the article in a curing mold; and, removing a cured article from the mold with the protective film adhering to the surface of the applique, the surface of which is essentially free from visually observable cracks. The hot flow of rubber in the curing mold does not substantially change the location of the applique which is embedded in the article. If the film does not remain adhered to a cured tire and drops into the mold, it is difficult to retrieve and, when a subsequent article is cured in the same mold, results in a scrap tire.
Abstract:
A method is provided for protecting a virgin surface of a tire innerliner from contamination by a release agent during curing. A pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA)-coated thermoformable film is pressed onto an exposed virgin surface of a green tire innerliner to adhere the PSA to the virgin surface and thereby form a protected green innerliner. The PSA is based on a rubber that is compatible with the rubber of the tire innerliner. The protected green innerliner is then exposed to the release agent, and cured. By virtue of the PSA, the film stays reliably in position. The thermoformable film is then removed to reveal the cured virgin surface substantially free of the release agent.
Abstract:
A method of preparing a rubber tire component for use in a tire manufacturing process. The process includes providing relative motion between the tire component and a plasma treatment device so as to plasma treat a surface of the tire component. The method may be used to increase the tack and/or the adhesion of the tire component so as to eliminate or reduce the use of solvent-based tire cements in the tire manufacturing process. The method may further be used to increase the wettability of the tire component so as to allow water-based compounds, such as water-based tire cements and striping inks, to be used in the tire manufacturing process.
