    摘要: A screening system and method are described herein which provide a unique and practical solution for enabling label-free high throughput screening (HTS) to aid in the discovery of new drugs. In one embodiment, the screening system enables direct binding assays to be performed in which a biomolecular interaction of a chemical compound (drug candidate) with a biomolecule (therapeutic target) can be detected using assay volumes and concentrations that are compatible with the current practices of HTS in the pharmaceutical industry. The screening system also enables the detection of bio-chemical interactions that occur in the wells of a microplate which incorporates biosensors and surface chemistry to immobilize the therapeutic target at the surface of the biosensors. The screening system also includes fluid handling and plate handling devices to help perform automated HTS assays.

    摘要: The present invention is a modular optical switch fabric that includes optical modules that are inserted into an optical chassis by way of plug-in electrical connectors. Each optical module includes a collimator panel and a beam steering panel secured to a frame member. The frame member is configured to position the collimator panel in fixed optical alignment relative to the beam steering panel. The modular optical switch fabric is upgradeable. The optical switch fabric allows users to expand the switch fabric capacity by simply adding switch fabric modules. The optical switch fabric also features modules that can be replaced and repaired without causing interruptions in service.

    摘要: A fiber optic sensor for simultaneously and independently measuring temperature and axial stress. The fiber sensor includes a pair of polarization-maintaining fibers that have known strain and temperature response curves. Each fiber has a plurality of fiber segments in which the elliptical cores are rotated 45° relative to the preceding core segment. Thus, the phase shift induced by temperature or stress in each of the fibers is detected, and the strain and temperature are derived from the detected phase shift. The fiber optic sensor is capable of dual operation. As both a temperature sensor and an axial stress sensor.

    摘要: A polarization-interferometry based tunable periodic filter includes polarization defining components such as polarizing beam splitters or polarizing beam displacers located on the input and output sides of a phase retarder such as a birefringent crystal. A polarization independent input consisting of multiple optical channels having a periodic frequency spacing is converted to a branched output of optical channels in which each branch has a periodic frequency spacing that is different from that of the input, and which are interleaved with each other. The output period is tunable by adjusting the phase delay of orthogonal polarization components. A contrast ratio of ≧20 dB can be realized. The device allows the mux/demux of up to 200 WDM channels with a 50 GHz frequency spacing. Applications of the device include a band splitter, a wavelength selective cross-connect, and a wavelength monitor.

The delay element may be made up of a grating having a period which causes coupling of the first wavelength from a first mode into a second mode. In another aspect, the invention includes a second grating positioned downstream from the first grating and having a period which causes coupling of the portion of light from the second propagation mode back into the first propagation mode. Also disclosed is an optical waveguide in which light at a wavelength &lgr; can propagate in at least a first and a second mode. The waveguide has an effective index of refraction n1 with respect to the first propagation mode of &lgr;, and an effective index of refraction n2 with respect to the second propagation mode. A grating formed in said waveguide and having a period approximately equal to(&lgr;/2)(n1−n2).
