Abstract:
A bone screw for pelvic bone fixation, the bone screw comprising an elongate body having a first end which is threaded for engaging at least one bone in the pelvic region, a second end comprising a screw head, and at least one opening across the length of the elongate body for adjustably receiving a fastening means to limit movement of the bone screw away from the engaged bone in use, wherein the at least one opening is shaped such that the position of the fastening means relative to the elongate body of the bone screw can be adjusted. A system for bone fixation in the pelvic region includes the bone screw and the fastening means.
Abstract:
Casings and housings for use in high speed airflow (for example for mounting on a high speed vehicle) are described. In one embodiment, a housing for imaging equipment is described. The housing has a tapering form with symmetrical angular truncations such that it tapers in the form of a wedge with two substantially planar regions. At least one substantially planar region includes an aperture formed of optically transparent material.
Abstract:
An apparatus enabling inclination measurements or irregular surfaces comprising a retaining end adapted to temporarily hold a device equipped with an inclinometer and a supporting end, fixed to the retaining end, conformed to abut an irregular surface whereby the apparatus enables the device equipped with an inclinometer to measure inclination of an irregular surface.
Abstract:
A device comprises an arm cover to be positioned under the arm before being closed thereover, a shoulder strap to be positioned under the shoulder and adapted to wrap the shoulder when attached, over the shoulder, to the closed arm cover and a longitudinal strap to be fixed to the table opposite to the head. The longitudinal strap can apply tension on the shoulder strap when shortened. A method for installing a device on an immobilised patient comprising positioning an arm cover under the arm and a shoulder strap connected to the arm cover under the shoulder, closing the arm cover over the arm and attaching the shoulder strap, over the shoulder, to the closed arm cover, fixing an end of a longitudinal strap, connected to the arm cover, to the table opposite to the head and pulling on the longitudinal strap to apply tension on the shoulder strap.

Abstract:
The present invention provides methods of strengthening and/or protecting wood products with reactive monomers and other impregnable materials. For example, materials may be impregnated which protect the wood from environmental and insect decay and/or prevent the growth of fungi and molds. Other suitable materials include, for example, dyes to enhance the wood's grain, permitting the use of wood species with less attractive untreated appearances. A first aspect of the invention provides a method for treating a wood product comprising the steps of impregnating the wood product with at least one crosslinkable monomer, wherein the monomer is capable of penetrating a cell wall of the wood product and polymerizing the at least one crosslinkable monomer.

Abstract:
A method for installing a surgical device on a spine for applying corrective forces thereon comprises installing at least one anchor on a first vertebra and at least another anchor on a second vertebra. At least one connector is installed on at least one of the first and the second vertebrae. A flexible tether is fixed to one of the anchors. The flexible tether is tensioned about a surface of the at least one connector. The flexible tether is fixed to the other one of the anchors to maintain a tension in the flexible tether to apply corrective forces to the vertebrae interconnected by the tether. A method for installing a staple device with rotational joints in the vertebrae is also provided.
Abstract:
Biomarkers for sepsis and resulting mortality can be detected by assaying blood samples. Changes in the concentration of the biomarkers can be used to indicate sepsis, risk of sepsis, progression of sepsis, remission from sepsis, and risk of mortality. Changes can be evaluated relative to data sets, natural or synthetic or semisynthetic control samples, or patient samples collected at different time points. Some biomarkers' concentrations are elevated during disease and some are depressed. These are termed informative biomarkers. Some biomarkers are diagnostic in combination with others. Individual biomarkers may be weighted when used in combinations. Biomarkers can be assessed in individual, isolated or assays, in parallel assays, or in single-pot assays.
