In a slide member in which an overlay is provided on a slide receiving surface of a base member, the overlay is formed by attaching a mixed solid lubricant on the slide receiving surface of the base member. The mixed solid lubricant is made by mixing a large amount of hydrogen containing solid lubricant which contains a large amount of hydrogen, and a small amount of hydrogen containing solid lubricant which contains a smaller hydrogen amount than the large amount of hydrogen containing lubricant. Thereby, a lubricant absence region where the solid lubricant is absent in a thickness direction is formed on the slide receiving surface of the base member after sliding, and an oxidized portion where the base member is oxidized is formed in the lubricant absence region.

Disclosed is a sliding member having a bearing alloy layer, an intermediate layer of Ni or a Ni alloy formed on the bearing alloy layer, and an overlay layer of a Sn alloy containing Cu formed on the intermediate layer. There exist Sn—Cu compounds in the overlay layer, which protrudently extend from the intermediate layer. The hard Sn—Cu compounds contribute to the overlay layer in improving fatigue resistance property. A soft Sn matrix being rich in an outer surface region of the overlay layer is responsible for keeping good conformability to have excellent anti-seizure property.

There is provided a plain bearing in which 0.3 to 25 vol. % of hard particles, having a mean particle diameter of not more than 1.5 &mgr;m, are dispersed in a main load portion of the overlay, so that the main load portion is formed into a hard region harder than the other portion of the overlay. With this construction, the main load portion is enhanced in wear resistance while the other portion is enhanced in foreign matter embeddability. Therefore, there is provided the plain bearing which is less liable to undergo seizure due to abnormal wear even if solid foreign matter are included into lubricating oil, thus exhibiting excellent wear resistance and foreign matter embeddability.

In producing an aluminum alloy bearing which comprises bonding an aluminum alloy layer to a backing metal layer composed of steel and then coating an intermediate layer and an overlay in this order on the surface of the aluminum alloy layer of the resulting semi-finished product, the surface of the aluminum alloy layer of the semi-finished product is subjected to etching treatment and the smut attached to the said surface is removed by subjecting the etched semi-finished product to de-smutting treatment using, as a de-smutting solution, an aqueous solution comprising 20 to 60% by weight of sulfuric acid and 2 to 10% by weight of a peroxoborate, whereby the tolerance of the bearing height is made small, the working environment is rendered good and the draining treatment is made easy.

In the present invention, there is provided a sliding member with a structure, in which a coating layer having a sliding surface is adhered to the surface of the base material, wherein the coating layer does not contain a resin binder but has solid lubricant plate crystal particles laminated therein, wherein these solid lubricant plate crystal particles have a lamellar crystal structure in which (001) planes are stacked in parallel, and at least in the sliding surface, the orientation index of the (001) plane of the solid lubricant plate crystal particles is 90% or more.

The Cu--Pb alloy bearing consists of a backing metal layer and a Cu--Pb bearing alloy layer which is bonded to the backing metal layer and whose matrix contains dispersed Pb-phase grains. In order to improve conformability of a sliding surface of a sliding member in an early state of sliding, there is provided a sliding member in which a plurality of holes are formed on a sliding surface, and the diameters (or the opening area) of the holes on the sliding surface are arranged so as to become gradually large as it gets closer to both ends in an axial direction from the center side in the axial direction. This feature decreases the pressurized area as it gets closer to the ends of the sliding surface so that it wears at an early stage, whereby a conformed surface following the deflection of a mating member is provided.
