A process has been provided for preparing thin solid electrolyte layer suitable for use in fuel cells. This process comprises the following steps: making electrically conductive at least one substance intended to form the electrolyte layer; maintaining said substance placed on at least one conductor in an enclosure under a vacuum, said support being connected to at least one anode of at least one electron beam accelerating anode and being at the same potential thereof; bombarding said substance by at least one focused electron beam; increasing the energy of said beam to bring gradually the substance being bombarded to a temperature close to the melting point of the substance; and maintaining this temperature, for a sufficient time to obtain by progressive evaporation, a layer of electrolyte of a desired thickness deposited on a support placed within the enclosure.

Avoiding the use of porous ceramic bearing structures, the proposal is for a 3-layer electrolyte fuel cell element, one electrode (1) of which is at the same time the bearer plate for the active cell element (12, 2, 3), is integrated via component (4) into the frame structure for a cell battery made up of individual elements, and in which the mechanical closing force between the frame structure and the active cell element is released with the aid of a spring-loaded region (11), in order not to expose the thin electrolyte layer (2) to thermally induced mechanical stresses. The active cell element, a combination of two porous and metallic electrodes (1, 3) with a gastight oxide electrolyte layer (2), are preferably produced by the vacuum plasma spray process.

An electrical storage battery, providing high energy density, comprises an anode compartment containing at least one reducer metal and a cathode compartment containing an electrically conductive solution of at least one salt of the said metal in a non-aqueous solution. The solution is in contact with at least one electron acceptor material and the two compartments are separated by a wall which is sealed to the fluids and is constituted by a solid material that allows the migration, at ambient temperature, of the reducer metal of the anode in the form of ions. The electron acceptor substance is soluble in the solution contained in the cathode compartment in the reduced form thereof, as well as in its original form. The battery enables storage of high power density energy in terms of both mass and volume.

An electrolyte-electrode assembly for a combustible battery comprising a ceramic solid electrolyte conductive to oxygen ions and impermeable to gas. An electrode is secured on one surface of the electrolyte and comprises a porous layer of doped indium oxide composed of dendrites which form trunks having a diameter between 500 and 10,000 A and whose principal axes are penpendicular to the surface of the electrolyte. A continuous layer of ceramic material, conductive to oxygen ions and electrons is interposed between the electrolyte and the electrode and is solid therewith. The electrode can have a second porous layer formed of granules of at least one chromite having the formula:T.sub.1-y Sr.sub.a Ca.sub.b CrO.sub.3in which T is a rare earth or yttrium or a mixture of these elements and y, a and b are numbers between 0 and 1, being able to take the value 0 and satisfying the equation a + b = y.
