    Abstract: A microscope comprises a microscope objective, a camera and an imaging optical system for imaging an object through the objective to the camera along a first optical path. A projection optical system is provided for projecting a test image onto the object through the objective, and the imaging optical system is configured to image the projected test image from the object to the camera through the objective and along at least part of the first optical path. A focus adjustment system is provided for focusing the test image at the camera. Using the same objective and the same camera for both imaging and focusing allows reduction of the cost of the microscope in comparison with known microscopes that provide separate focusing systems.

    Abstract: A microscope system has an illumination optical system comprising a multi-mode optical fibre having an egress for emitting a laser beam. The egress is located in a plane that is conjugate to the microscope sample plane. The illumination optical system is configured such that the laser beam is incident at the objective lens laterally displaced from the principal optical axis of the objective lens in order that the objective lens delivers the laser beam to the sample plane at an angle that is oblique to the principal optical axis. Utilization of a multi-mode optical fibre for laser delivery in oblique illumination microscopy, such as TIRF microscopy, solves problems associated with using single-mode optical fibres such as alignment and uniformity of illumination.

    Abstract: A Raman analysing apparatus comprises an imaging optical system for imaging an object along an optical path to an optical detector, an irradiation optical system for illuminating the object, and a scanning device comprising a spinning pinhole disk. The irradiation optical system directs light onto the scanning device to illuminate the object at a plurality of illumination points. The imaging optical system images Raman scattered light emitted from the object at the illumination points to an intermediate image plane at which the scanning device is located. The imaging optical system may include a spectral filter and/or at least one optical spectral analyser. The apparatus enables high speed confocal Raman imaging and/or high speed confocal Raman spectography to be performed.

    Abstract: A support assembly for a heat pump system comprising a base and a plurality of platforms for supporting a respective heat pump such as a thermoelectric cooler. Resiliently flexible pipes support the platforms with respect to the base and form part of a coolant circulation system. The platforms are movable with respect to each other and the support structures allow the platforms to move with respect to the base. An object to be cooled, such as an image sensor, is mounted on the heat pumps. The platforms are able to move in response to expansion and contraction of the object thereby preventing damage to the heat pump system.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a spectrometer, comprising: an inlet for the receipt of incident light; an optical path for transmitting the incident light from the inlet to an analysis plane; a focusing element located along the optical path, wherein the spectrometer has an in-focus position in which a focal point of the spectrometer and the analysis plane coincide; and a controller adapted in use, when a removable light disperser is placed along the optical path, to cause the spectrometer to be in the in-focus position by controlling the position of the focusing element relative to the analysis plane. The spectrometer is used in the analysis of light from a light source and, due to the ability of the controller to manage the focus point by way of moving the focusing element, the spectrometer is able to bring itself into an in-focus configuration without the need for a user to intervene.

    Abstract: A microscope for performing differential phase contrast (DPC) microscopy comprises an infinity-corrected microscope objective and a tube lens, and at least one lens configured to image a back focal plane of the microscope objective to a conjugate back focal plane outside of the microscope objective. An aperture stop is located at the conjugate back focal plane. The object plane is located between the objective and the illumination source, the illumination source being configurable to illuminate the object from any one of a plurality of locations that are angularly displaced about an axis that is perpendicular to the object plane. The illumination source is placed at a working distance from the object to allow the user unrestricted access to the specimen area. The microscope may use a standard objective, which reduces cost.

    Abstract: A Raman spectroscopy apparatus comprises an imaging optical system that transmits light from an object to a spectrograph along an optical path. A scanning device intersects, and is movable with respect to, the optical path. Light is directed onto the scanning device to illuminate the object at a plurality of illumination points. The imaging optical system transmits Raman scattered light emitted from the object at the illumination points to an intermediate image plane, the scanning device being located at the intermediate image plane, and transmits the Raman scattered light from the intermediate image plane to the spectrograph. In comparison with conventional confocal Raman spectroscopy, the apparatus can perform Raman analysis of a sample more quickly, and in comparison with conventional line scan Raman spectroscopy the apparatus can perform Raman analysis more accurately.
