A novel graft copolymer composition comprising 30 to 90 wt. % of a graft copolymer containing substantially no polyphenylene ether homopolymer and 10 to 70 wt. % of a styrene type compound polymer having a number average molecular weight in the range from 50,000 to 200,000. The graft copolymer is prepared by graft polymerizing 20 to 200 parts by weight of a styrene type compound on an oligophenylene ether with a polymerization degree of 60 to 90. The composition has excellent resistance to creep.

A film or tube of a specific copolymer of ethylene with 3.0 to 18.0 mole % of a comonomer containing a polar functional group, for example, vinyl acetate is treated with a sulfonating agent at a lower temperature for a short time to give a hydrophilic membrane excellent in hydrophilic properties as well as other properties such as folding endurance or alkali resistance. The hydrophilic membrane is useful as ion-exchange membrane, separator for storage battery or dialysis diaphragm. It is also similar to cellophane in transparency as well as in properties and therefore can be used in, for example, processing of a smoked ham.

Polyphenylene ethers of 5 microns or more in particle size which are useful for preparation of parts of electric devices are continuously produced according to oxidative polymerization of 2,6-disubstituted phenols by preparing a 15 to 35 % (by weight) solution of 2,6-disubstituted phenol in dimethylformamide or in a mixed solvent composed of toluene and methanol, subjecting the solution to polymerization in one zone while maintaining the reaction system in the state of a homogeneous solution, and transferring the polymerization liquid to another zone to complete the polymerization while allowing the resulting polymer to precipitate.

Polyphenylene ether compositions reinforced with glass fiber, are excellent in shaping processability. They are prepared by blending from 10 to 50 percent by weight of glass fiber and from 90 to 50 percent by weight of a basic resin composition, said basic resin composition consisting of from 95 to 50 percent by weight based on the basic composition of polyphenylene ether and from 5 to 50 percent by weight of based on the basic composition of amorphous polymer, e.g. styrene-acrylonitrile polymer. A 1 : 1 mixture of polyphenylene ether with polystyrene, for example, may be used in place of the polyphenylene ether.
