An extension for a bit or cutter tool relative to a rotational power source. The extension includes a blind bore receiving the shank of the bit or cutter. The opposite end of the body has structure that can be operatively connected to the source of rotational power. A second bore through the side of the body intersects the first bore. The second bore has two portions. The inner-most portion has a smaller diameter and is internally threaded. The outer portion has a larger diameter and slidably receives a clamping member. Clamping member can be retained by a shoulder bolt and has an end that can enter into the blind bore to clamp the shank in place. Preferably the clamping member is a sleeve having a center bore and a concentric exterior. Another aspect of the invention includes a biasing means that biases the sleeve outward of the bore.

A power drivable chuck 30 includes a body 72 which is formed with a shank-receiving opening 34 having a triangular cross section. A spring 104 is located about a forward section 78 of the body 72, and is captured within a chamber 102 between a base surface 98 of a sleeve 76 and a forward surface 100 of an intermediate section 80 of the body. A ball 90 is located in a passage 86 formed through the body 72 from an exterior surface 96 to the opening 34. A pair of slots 106 and 108 are also formed in the body in communication, and aligned, with the passage 86 on opposite sides of the passage. The ball 90 is formed with a through hole 112 and receives a pin 114 therein, with opposite ends of the pin extending from the ball and into respective ones of the slots 106 and 108. The spring 104 engages and normally urges the opposite ends of the pin 114 against the base surface 98 of the sleeve 76 normally to extend a portion 90a of the ball 90 into the opening 34 for locking a shank 42 within the opening. In the front head (11) of a machine hammer (10), transversely disposed wedges (18) are adapted to lock the working tool (12) so that the working tool (12) is axially movable by form-restricted cooperation with recesses (16) on the working tool (12). Each wedge (18) is locked in the front head (11) by a key (20), which extends across the wedge (18) into engagement with a transverse bore (21) therein. The key (20) has a releasable locking device including a locking element affixed in the front head (11) and formed by a polyurethane block (24). The block (24) is provided with a through bore (27) and has elastically form-recovering material properties. When, for purposes of locking the key (20), the key (20) is pressed through the bore of the block (24), the block (24) is caused to expand resiliently into an annular groove (22) on the key (20), thereby locking the key (20) in the front head (11) and providing its wedge (18) locking function. In use of two wedges (18), one single key (20) is set to lock both wedges (18) and is locked by one single block (24).

A retainer arrangement is disclosed for securing punches, dies or similar machine tool elements within a bore in a tool holder body, the retainer providing for secure and accurately repeatable orientation of the punch or other element within the bore. The retainer comprises a conically tapered pin retainer having a threaded shank portion adapted to be received into a threaded portion of a retainer seat extending into the holder body transversely to the holder bore and having a conically tapered portion partially intersecting the same. The leading end of the tapered pin retainer is tapered to mate with the tapering portion of the retainer seat and with a complementary conical tapered groove formed in the punch shank, to securely retain the punch or other machine element within the holder body, and also to precisely and repeatably orient the same with respect to the holder body bore in receiving the same. The geometry of the mating retainer pin, groove and tapering portion of the retainer seat is such as to insure seating of the pin in the groove to provide firm engagement with the machine tool element. Also disclosed is the alternate provision of opposed pairs of the tapered pin retainers for heavy duty applications or a single retainer for light duty applications. In one embodiment, the axis of the retainer is inclined from the normal to the tool axis to facilitate removal thereof. The punch shank is disclosed as being formed with a series of ratchet cuts formed along the longitudinal length thereof to facilitate removal of the punch by means of a screw driver or similar tool, while the tool holder backing plates are formed with recesses for easy removal from the press arm members.

Retaining means for an earthworking tip member including a wire spring member bonded into a washer shaped member of resilient material. The means also include a partially cylindrical partially flat surfaced retaining bar member having grooves for receiving portions of the wire spring member within the open central portion of the washer shaped resilient member. The resilient member is received within a recessed portion of an adapter or shank upon which the earthworking tip member is retained. Upon engagement with the grooves in the bar member, the wire spring means and the resilient member tend to rotate the retaining bar to lock the bar member in place from firm retention of the tip member during use. The retention means is also selectively releasable when desired for removal thereof and release of the tip member.
