Abstract: A switching network for effecting point-to-point communication between nodes has a time-varying switching configuration, which causes successive activation and deactivation of multiple channels of the switching network, a first of the channels connecting, when activated, a transmitter node and a first receiver node, and a second of the channels connecting, when activated, the transmitter node and a second receiver node. In a training phase, a method comprises: transmitting from the transmitter node via each channel a known training signal, to cause each receiver node to receive a distorted training signal, using the first distorted training signal and knowledge of the first known training signal to determine respective one or more transmit-side equalizer (EQ) coefficients for each channel, and storing, in memory accessible to the transmitter node, the first transmit-side EQ coefficients, in association with each channel, for use in conducting scheduled communications over the switching network in a communications phase.

Abstract: A transmitter block, comprising an optical source, a modulator, a transmission circuit and a control circuit. The optical source has a laser providing an optical signal. The modulator is configured to encode data into the optical signal using an m-quadrature amplitude modulation format. The transmission circuit has circuitry to receive data to be encoded into the optical signal. The transmission circuit has at least one drive circuit supplying driver signals to the modulator to cause the modulator to encode data into the optical signal using the m-quadrature amplitude modulation format. The control circuit supplies control signals to the transmission circuit to cause the transmission circuit to change the m-quadrature amplitude modulation format from a first m-quadrature amplitude modulation format to a second m-quadrature amplitude modulation format based upon predicted degradation of a link to receive modulated data from the modulator.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method for converting the topological charge of an orbital angular momentum mode of light to an opposite topological charge by applying the light to a spool of optical fiber having a bend radius R and length L. The length of the fiber used to form the spool is defined by ½ the bend-induced 2π walk-off length Ll,mb(2π). The length of the fiber L and the bend radius R of the spool may be adjusted to account for an ellipticity-induced 2π walk-off length Ll,m3(2π). Using the proportionality rules, Ll,mb(2π)∝R2l and Ll,m3(2π)∝ε−l adjustments to account for ellipticity induced 2π walk-off length Ll,me(2π), or to account for a change in the bend radius ΔR of the spool can be easily determined.

Abstract: Consistent with the present disclosure, an encoder circuit is provided at a transmit side of an optical fiber link that maps an input sequence of bits of fixed length k a sequence of symbols of a codeword of length n, such that the symbols of the codeword define a predetermined transmission probability distribution. Preferably, each symbol of the codeword is generated during a corresponding clock cycle, such that after n clock cycles, a complete codeword corresponding to the input bit sequence is output. On a receive end of the link, a decoder is provided that outputs the k-bit sequence every n clock cycles. Accordingly, buffers need not be provided at the output of the encoder and the input of the decoder, such that processing of the input sequence, codewords, and output sequence may be achieved efficiently without large buffers and complicated circuitry. Moreover, the input sequence, with any binary alphabet may be matched to a desired output distribution with any arbitrary alphabet. Accordingly, probabilistic constellation shaping may be achieved over constellations of arbitrary size. In addition, relatively long codewords, may be encoded and decoded with the apparatus and method disclosed herein. Accordingly, for a fixed SNR a higher SE (more bits per symbol) can be achieved. Alternatively, for a fixed SE, a lower SNR may be sufficient. Moreover, the resulting SE may be finely tailored to a particular optical link SNR to provide data transmission rates that are higher than the low order modulation formats that would otherwise be employed for optical signals carried by such links.

Abstract: Vector and matrix multiplications can be accomplished in photonic circuitry by coherently combining light that has been optically modulated, in amplitude and/or phase, in accordance with the vector and matrix components. Disclosed are various beneficial photonic circuit layouts characterized by loss- and delay-balanced optical paths. In various embodiments, loss balancing across paths is achieved with suitable optical coupling ratios and balanced numbers of waveguide crossings (using dummy crossings where needed) across the paths. Delays are balanced in some embodiments with geometrically delay-matched optical paths.
