    摘要: A method and apparatus for obtaining information relating to the eating quality of meat. The meat under test may include a hot or cold meat carcass, raw or cooked meat or live animal. The method includes the steps of injecting an acoustic signal into the meat, monitoring the effect of the meat on at least one characteristic of the acoustic signal propagated into the meat, and applying the monitored effects to a predetermined algorithm relating eating quality to monitored acoustic effects to indicate the eating quality of the meat under test. The acoustic probe assembly of the apparatus includes a pair of arms adapted for insertion into a meat carcass. The arms carry respective means for coupling acoustic signals into and receiving signals from the carcass. Further, the arms include means for coupling the acoustic signals to the surface of a carcass and monitoring scattering of the acoustic signals to predict the eating quality of meat.

    摘要: A flaw sensor for a metal pipe has an exciting coil for generating remote field eddy currents in the pipe. First and second groups of receiving coils are spaced from the exciting coil by respective distances along the axis of the pipe in a region of the generated remote field eddy currents. The first and second groups have respective pluralities of receiving coils with axes perpendicular to the pipe axis and disposed circumferentially about the pipe axis at predetermined angular increments wherein the receiving coils of the second group are staggered relative to the receiving coils of the first group. A third receiving coil is disposed coaxially with the pipe at still another distance from the exciting coil along the pipe axis but also in the region of the generated remote field eddy currents. When a defect in the thickness of the metal pipe is encountered, a magnetic field caused by the defect to be perpendicular to the axis of the pipe is detected by one or more of the receiving coils of the first and/or second group. The third receiving coil detects phase changes to the magnetic field generated parallel to the pipe by the eddy currents. A ratio of phase changes produced by a standard thickness of a reference pipe and a sample subject pipe is used as a correction factor for detected phase changes in a defective pipe to accurately calculate the defective wall thickness.

    摘要: On the bottom face of a measurement section, measurement electrodes and a reference electrode are formed and a solution supply pipe is opened. Then, if a predetermined electrolytic solution is supplied from the solution supply pipe, the electrolytic solution can be held on an electrolytic solution holding surface on the lower end of the measurement section, utilizing the with surface tension thereof for providing a gas reception portion. Since the electrolytic solution is exposed directly to the air, substances in a vapor phase (particularly, odor substances) are diffused into the electrolytic solution, causing an electric state to change. The substances in the vapor phase can be detected by detecting the electric state change. The electrolytic solution held on the lower face of the measurement section can be updated by further supplying more electrolytic solution.

    摘要: An improved assay for the determination for motile facultative anaerobic pathogens is described which involves the use of a growth-enhancing substance such as oxyrase enzyme in order to increase the growth rate of a target pathogen in a growth medium, to thereby shorten the time required to complete the assay. The assay of the invention is particularly suited for the determination of L. monocytogenes in food products such as meat and dairy goods, and provides and effective screening assay which can be completed in about 24-36 hours. Preferably, a product sample is first incubated in Fraser Broth containing oxyrase enzyme; if a darkened color results, a small portion of the liquid is then placed within a U-shaped culture tube provided with modified Oxford agar; the motility characteristics of the target pathogen are observed in the U-tube, which is indicative of the presence of L. monocytogenes.

    摘要: Method and apparatus for determining a condemnation condition in a post mortem animal intended for human consumption is taught hereinabove. The apparatus includes an ultrasound machine, including a probe, wherein the probe is positioned on the animal such that a cross-sectional image of the portion of the animal to be examined is shown. An image analyzer determines and identifies a pattern of anatomically distinct tissue and bone outline of the animal shown on the image. Pattern recognition equipment compares the pattern of tissue and bone outline with a norm reference for a healthy animal and at least one known deformation pattern for tissue of animals requiring condemnation. If a greater correlation with one of the known deformation patterns than with the norm reference pattern is shown then, means for indicating a condemnation condition for the animal are activated. Also taught hereinabove, is a method of developing further tests for determining a condemnation condition in an animal.

    摘要: A rapid, microwave-based Kjeldahl digestion method wherein microwave energy is applied to an acid/sample mixture at the beginning of, and thereafter during the digestion. After the application of microwave energy is discontinued, the digestate is diluted by pulsed addition of water, followed by continuous addition of water. Dilution in this manner prevents a sudden surge in gas evolution, and eliminates the need for an intervening cooling step, thereby reducing processing time. Also provided is a method for fat separation from a fat-containing protein sample during the digestion.

    摘要: The presence or absence of residues of an antibiotic such as penicillin is rapidly determined in a sample such as milk or meat. The sample is added to a test vessel containing a solidified agar medium containing spores of a microorganism which has high sensitivity for the antibiotic being determined. After addition of nutrients and incubation, presence or absence of the antibiotic is indicated by the extent of growth of the microorganism. The nutrients may be in the form of a tablet which may be placed on the surface of the solidified agar medium prior to use. The tablet may be coated with a layer preventing moisture transport from the medium into the tablet during storage, but allowing nutrient transport under test conditions. The extent of microorganism growth may be determined visually or indicated by an indicator present in the solidified agar medium or the nutrient tablet. The test vessel preferably has a cross-section of 3 to 20 mm and a height of 3 to 30 mm.
