摘要:
A liquid crystal display device includes: a first substrate and a second substrate; a liquid crystal layer interposed between the first substrate and the second substrate, the liquid crystal layer comprising liquid crystal molecules having a negative dielectric anisotropy; a plurality of first convex members formed on the first substrate along a first direction; and a plurality of second convex members formed on the second substrate along a second direction which is different from the first direction, the plurality of first convex members partially overlapping the plurality of second convex members, the plurality of first convex members and the plurality of second convex members defining liquid crystal regions. Under an applied voltage, the liquid crystal molecules in each liquid crystal region are aligned in an axially symmetrical or radial orientation. In the absence of an applied voltage, the liquid crystal molecules in each liquid crystal region are aligned substantially perpendicularly to the first substrate and the second substrate.

The invention is directed to a liquid crystalline display comprising a display cell containing liquid crystalline material and a retardation layer. The retardation layer comprises a, preferably slightly cross-linked, high-molecular weight material layer and a substrate, wherein the high-molecular weight material has a nematic phase above its Tg and a dynamic viscosity at the working temperature of at least 100 Pa.s. The difference of the Tc of the high-molecular weight material and the Tc of the low-molecular weight material of the display cell (TC.sub.cell) is in the range of -30.degree. C. to +30.degree. C., preferably in the range of -20.degree. C. to +20.degree. C., and more preferably in the range of -10.degree. C. to +10.degree. C.; and the Tg of the high-molecular weight liquid crystalline material is lower than 50.degree. C. It was found that if high-molecular weight material is used with a Tc comparable with that of the, preferably low-molecular weight, liquid crystalline material of the active cell, the temperature dependency of the retardation value of the retardation layer is comparable with that of the active cell. Thus, the retardation value of the retardation layer is comparable with that of the active cell within the temperature range in which displays are used. It was further found that by cross-linking of the high molecular weight liquid crystalline material, the retardation layers according to the invention become less susceptible to pinhole forming and unwanted variation of the twist, and have improved mechanical stability.

A liquid crystal display panel including a guest-host type liquid crystal layer and a reflecting plate. A polarized light rotating member is arranged between the liquid crystal layer and the reflecting plate for rotating a vibrating plane of an incident polarized light to reduce a dispersion of states of polarization of light regarding wavelength. The polarized light rotating member preferably comprises first and second superimposed linear phase plates. The .DELTA.nd of the first linear phase plates located on the side of the liquid crystal layer from the second phase plate is approximately .lambda..sub.0 /2 and the .alpha.nd of the second linear phase plate is approximately .lambda..sub.0 /4.

In an optical information processor, phase-type spatial modulation of light is achieved by placing a twisted nematic liquid crystal cell between two polarizers, such that a direction of alignment of liquid crystal molecules at an input side of the liquid crystal cell is parallel to a transmission access of a first one of the polarizers, and such that a direction of alignment liquid crystal molecules at an output side of the liquid crystal cell is parallel to a transmission access of a second one of the polarizers. Also, phase modulation which is substantially free from amplitude variations can be realized by placing two twisted nematic liquid crystal cells between two polarizers. In such an arrangement, a direction of alignment of the liquid crystal molecules at an input side of a first liquid crystal cell is parallel to a transmission access of a first polarizer, and a direction of alignment of liquid crystal molecules at an output side of the first liquid crystal cell is perpendicular to a direction of alignment of the liquid crystal molecules at an input side of the second liquid crystal cell. The direction of alignment of the liquid crystal molecules of the second liquid crystal cell is perpendicular to a transmission access of the second polarizer. The two liquid crystal cells have identical drive voltages applied thereto, and have identical retardations and twist angles. However, the twist angle of the first liquid crystal cell is in an opposite direction to that of the second liquid crystal cell.

A projection type liquid crystal display unit has dichroic mirrors capable of dividing a light from a light source into R, G and B components which are guided along respective light paths. Each of at least two of these light paths in provided with an optical system which includes a pair of polarizing plates, a twist nematic liquid crystal and at least one phase plate. The angles of the retardation phase axis of the phase plate and light-interruption axes of the polarizing plates or, alternatively, the retardation of the phase plate is determined so as to improve the light-interruption of the liquid crystal panel in light-interruption mode, thereby enhancing contrast of the display image.
