Abstract:
Disclosed and claimed are cocoa extracts such as polyphenols or procyanidins, methods for preparing such extracts, as well as uses for them, especially as antineoplastic agents and antioxidants. Disclosed and claimed are antineoplastic compositions containing cocoa polyphenols or procyanidins and methods for treating patients employing the compositions. Additionally disclosed and claimed is a kit for treating a patient in need of treatment with an antineoplastic agent containing cocoa polyphenols or procyanidins as well as a lyophilized antineoplastic composition containing cocoa polyphenols or procyanidins. Further, disclosed and claimed is the use of the invention in antioxidant, preservative and topiosomerase-inhibiting compositions and methods.
Abstract:
(Meth)acrylic acid copolymers are used to increase mucosal permeability, comonomers present being (meth)acrylic esters and/or other monomers capable of free-radical polymerization, and the (meth)acrylic acid:comonomer molar ratio varying from 99:1 to 1:99.
Abstract:
A pharmaceutical composition contains an extract obtainable from a plant of the genus Trichocaulon or Hoodia containing an appetite suppressant agent having the formula (1). A process for obtaining the extract and a process for synthesizing compound (1) and its analogues and derivatives is also provided. The invention also extends to the use of such extracts and compound (1) and its analogues for the manufacture of medicaments having appetite suppressant activity. The invention further provides novel intermediates for the synthesis of compound (1).

Abstract:
A medicament which comprises as an active ingredient a weakly basic anion exchange resin chelating with ferric ions, preferably a polyamine-type or an acrylic-type resin. The medicament has excellent adsorbability and selectivity to phosphate ions and efficiently adsorb phosphate ions in vivo, and accordingly, is useful for therapeutic and/or preventive treatment of hyperphosphatemia.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to the use of a bioadhesive aqueous composition to control the pH of the vagina to alleviate microorganism growth and feminine odor such as presented by bacterial vaginosis. The composition contemplated herein comprises water and an acidic polymer, specifically one wherein 80% of the monomers contain at least one carboxyl group [--COOH] and wherein the polymer is cross-linked so as to be water-swellable, but water-insoluble. The composition of the present invention is additionally a bioadhesive providing for a long-lasting benefit and control of vaginal pH.

Abstract:
The present invention is an injectable medical composition useful for replacing natural lubricating fluids in the body of humans or animals. The method and composition can be used for the treatment of joints and other parts of the body wherein natural lubrication between surfaces is deficient or where additional lubrication is required. The composition comprises a hydrophilic polymer suspended in a hydrophobic carrier so that the suspension is easily injectable into the desired body part. After injection, the carrier diffuses away from the polymer and is replaced by aqueous body fluids thereby causing the polymer to absorb or adsorb water forming a viscous, lubricating fluid.
