摘要: A method of removing Li.sub.2 O present in an electrolyte predominantly of LiCl and KCl. The electrolyte is heated to a temperature not less than about 500.degree. C. and then Al is introduced into the electrolyte in an amount in excess of the stoichiometric amount needed to convert the Li.sub.2 O to a Li-Al alloy and lithium aluminate salt. The salt and aluminum are maintained in contact with agitation for a time sufficient to convert the Li.sub.2 O.

摘要: A process is provided for treating the solid reaction by-products of lith and sulfur hexafluoride. Lithium in the by-product solid waste is converted to lithium hydroxide. Lithium sulfide in the by-product is converted to lithium hydroxide. Lithium sulfide in the by-product is reacted with an acid to form a water soluble salt and hydrogen sulfide. The hydrogen sulfide is converted to an alkali metal sulfate. Solid aluminum oxide and lithium fluoride are recovered as a feed in the production of aluminum. Remaining lithium salts in solution are converted to lithium carbonate.

The so-formed crystalline 2-layer LiOH.2Al(OH).sub.3.nH.sub.2 O is particularly suitable for exchange of the OH ion with larger X' ions to produce other crystalline 2-layer LiX'.2Al(OH).sub.3.nH.sub.2 O.

摘要: A resin/aluminate composite which has been substantially loaded with Li.sup.+ values by being contacted with a contaminated, Li.sup.+ -containing aqueous solution, is pre-washed with a substantially pure, concentrated NaCl brine to remove the contaminants without removing the Li.sup.+ values, then is washed with water to leach out much, but not all, of the Li.sup.+ values. The resin/aluminate composite comprises a macroporous anion exchange resin having crystalline LiX.2Al(OH).sub.3 dispersed therein, where X is halide.
