The visible light propagates through the crystal from the input face to one of the output faces. That output face is coated with a dichroic optical coating that transmits unconverted visible light and reflects the ultraviolet light. The reflected ultraviolet light exits the optically nonlinear crystal via the other output face and is coupled out of the resonator at an angle to the resonator axis.

An optically pumped semiconductor laser includes an active ring-resonator having two or more optically pumped semiconductor (OPS) structures each including a mirror-structure and a multilayer gain-structure. The mirror-structures serve as fold mirrors for the resonator axis. An optically nonlinear crystal may be included in the ring-resonator for generating second-harmonic radiation from fundamental radiation generated in the resonator. Another optically nonlinear crystal may be provided for generating third-harmonic or fourth-harmonic radiation from the second-harmonic radiation. In one example, including a third-harmonic generating crystal, a passive ring-resonator partially coaxial with the active ring-resonator is provided for circulating second-harmonic radiation to provide resonant amplification of the second-harmonic radiation for enhancing third-harmonic conversion. Apparatus for automatically maintaining the passive ring-resonator in a resonant condition for the second-harmonic radiation is disclosed.

An optically-pumped semiconductor (OPS) laser includes a multilayer structure including a mirror-structure surmounted by a multilayer semiconductor gain-structure. A membrane mirror is spaced apart from the mirror structure to form a laser resonator between the mirror structure and the membrane mirror, with the gain-structure included in the laser resonant cavity. Pump light is transmitted through the membrane mirror into the gain structure. The membrane mirror includes a grating having parameters selected such that the membrane mirror has different reflectivities at the wavelength of the laser in two orthogonally-oriented planes of polarization. The membrane mirror is axially movable along the resonator axis for varying the resonator length to select the wavelength of the single lasing mode.

A cylindrical two-dimensional diode-laser assembly includes fractionally-cylindrical dielectric segments bonded in a circular aperture in a metal heat-sink. Diode laser bars are located in gaps between the segments with light from the diode-lasers directed inwardly. The segments are made by cutting slots in one end of a tube of the dielectric material with the width of the slots corresponding to the width of the gaps and the part of the tube between slots providing the segments. The slotted tube is metallized and the slotted end of the tube is inserted into the heat-sink aperture with an unslotted part of the tube outside the aperture. The slotted part of the tube is bonded in the aperture and the unslotted part of the tube separated from the slotted part leaving the segments bonded in the aperture.
