Abstract: Disclosed herein is an electronic display assembly including a backlight that is positioned to illuminate a liquid crystal display, and a novel cooling mechanism in the form of a thermal plate that is located and configured to transfer heat from the backlight to a thermally conductive housing of the electronic display assembly. The thermal plate is preferably placed in conductive thermal communication with the backlight and with the thermally conductive housing for this purpose. One or more air flow apertures may pass through the thermal plate. A convective cooling loop may also be provided, which cooling loop may include a fan that is located to move cooling air over the thermal plate and/or though one or more apertures in the thermal plate. Both a top and bottom thermal plate may be employed in some exemplary embodiments.

Abstract: A point-of-sale advertising system for use with a display case having a front glass sheet positioned in front of a cavity for accepting goods, the system containing a transparent LCD positioned behind the front glass sheet, and a plurality of LEDs positioned adjacent to one pair of opposing edges of the LCD and arranged so that light which is emitted from the LEDs is directed backwards towards the cavity. Further embodiments may also contain a door assembly and frame surrounding the front glass sheet and LCD, a switch positioned to determine when the door assembly is open or closed, and electrical circuitry adapted to turn off the LEDs when the door is open and turn on the LEDs when the door is closed.

Abstract: A system for controlling the transparency of a display case having a door is disclosed. A transparent electronic display is positioned within the door, a controller is electrically connected to the electronic display and configured to track the present time, a network connectivity device is in electrical connection with the controller and communication with a communications network, and a remotely located user interface receives user input through the communications network. The user input is used to generate the transparency data, which is used by the controller to drive the electronic display at various transparency levels.

Abstract: A system and method for altering the characteristics of a display based on environmental data is disclosed. Exemplary embodiments provide a light sensor, an environmental processing unit which is adapted to receive electrical signals from the light sensor and generate an environmentally-reactive control signal (Sa), an image signal processor which accepts Sa and an encoded image signal (Se) and generates a pre-decoding image signal (Sp), and an image signal decoder which accepts Sp and generates a decoded image signal for the display. The environmentally-reactive control signal (Sa) may contain the instantaneous value of the desired display black level Sb. Alternatively or additionally, the environmentally-reactive control signal (Sa) may contain a signal linearity modification value.

Abstract: A system and method for mounting an electronic display is disclosed herein. A rear cover mounting bracket may contain a rear plate and a sidewall which surrounds a perimeter of the plate. A plurality of mounting holes may be placed within the plate to allow fastening the rear plate to a vertical surface. An electronic display assembly module may contain a thermal plate where the attachment of the rear cover mounting bracket to the module creates a plenum which can house one or more electronic components. In a preferred embodiment, the rear plate contains a pair of hooks and the module contains a pair of corresponding cylinders which can be engaged with the hooks so that the module can hang from the hooks.

Abstract: A transparent electronic display assembly is disclosed. The assembly comprises an electronic display and a light guide placed behind the electronic display. The assembly preferably has a front bracket that contacts the front surface of the light guide and a rear bracket that contacts the rear surface of the light guide. The electronic display may be adhered to the brackets. While the light guide may be constrained from movement towards or away from the electronic display by the front and rear brackets, the light guide is generally permitted to move and thermally expand parallel to the electronic display.

Abstract: An electronic display assembly is disclosed herein. An electronic display may be positioned within a housing where the display is cooled by a combination of airflows. A closed loop of isolated gas may be used with an open loop of ambient air which passes through the housing in order to cool the display. Preferably, the closed loop of isolated gas cools the front surface of the display while the open loop of ambient air cools the rear surface of the display. Preferably, the closed loop of isolated gas is not permitted to mix with the open loop of ambient air.

Abstract: A sealed, transparent liquid crystal display (LCD) assembly is disclosed. The assembly preferably contains a front and a rear glass panel. The assembly also preferably has a spacer element that is positioned around a perimeter of, and sandwiched between, the front and rear glass panels, thereby providing a gaseous seal. The LCD panel is positioned between the front and rear glass panels. In an exemplary embodiment, a two way light guide would be used within the assembly.

Abstract: The exemplary embodiments herein provide a method for controlling the luminance of an electronic display, including the steps of determining the sunset and sunrise times for the day and determining whether the present time is between sunrise and sunset or between sunset and sunrise. The backlight may be driven at a daytime level if the present time is between sunrise and sunset, while the backlight may be driven at a nighttime level if the present time is between sunset and sunrise. In some embodiments, artificial ambient sensor (AAS) data is used to determine the desired backlight or display luminance. The AAS data may be adjusted for a sunset or sunrise transition time, as well as for an approximate percentage of cloud cover in the sky.
